The most visionary book in the prophets, written by a priest in Babylonian exile. Opens with the wheels within wheels and the four living creatures — the most elaborate vision of God in Scripture. Chapters 4–12 are acted-out signs: Ezekiel draws Jerusalem on a brick, lies on his side, shaves his head, packs for exile. Chapters 16 and 23 use unflinching allegory for Israel’s unfaithfulness. Chapter 18 is the great statement of individual responsibility: the soul who sins will die; the soul who repents will live. Chapter 34 is the lament for the false shepherds. Chapter 36:26 gives the promise of a new heart and a new spirit. Chapter 37 is the valley of dry bones — can these bones live? Chapter 47 is the river flowing from the temple, ankle-deep then knee-deep then too deep to cross, making the Dead Sea fresh. The book closes with the city’s name: the Lord is there.
