The book of the wilderness years: two censuses frame forty years of wandering. Opens with the counting of 603,550 fighting men at Sinai and the meticulous arrangement of the camp around the tabernacle. Chapter 6 contains the Aaronic blessing — The Lord bless you and keep you. Chapters 13–14 are the catastrophe: the spies return from Canaan, ten of twelve say they cannot win, the people weep and rebel, and God sentences them to forty years in the wilderness — one year per day the spies were gone. Chapter 16 is Korah’s rebellion: the ground opens and swallows Korah, Dathan and Abiram alive. Chapter 20 is Moses’ own failure at the waters of Meribah — he strikes the rock instead of speaking to it and is barred from the promised land. Chapter 21 has the bronze serpent on a pole. Chapters 22–24 are Balaam and his donkey: sent to curse Israel, Balaam blesses them instead, four times, including the star-prophecy in chapter 24.
