God tells the prophet to marry a woman who keeps being unfaithful — and to keep loving her, and taking her back, as a living picture of God and a people who won't stay put. It's tender and heartbroken by turns, and it holds the line Jesus quoted twice: I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
