The mark on the forehead
Then he called out in my hearing with a loud voice: Come near, you who are in charge of the city, each man with his destroying weapon in his hand. And there were six men coming from the direction of the upper gate that faces north, each man with his breaking weapon in his hand. And one man among them was dressed in linen, with a writing kit at his side. And they went in and stood beside the bronze altar. And the glory of the God of Israel had gone up off the cherub it had been on, to the doorway of the house. And he called to the man dressed in linen with the writing kit at his side. The LORD said to him, “Go through Jerusalem and set a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the disgusting things being done in it.” And to the others he said in my hearing: Go through the city after him and strike. Don't let your eye spare, and don't have any pity. Kill right through — old men, young men and young women, little ones and women. But don't come near anyone with the mark on him. And start at my sanctuary. So they started with the old men who were before the house. And he said to them: Defile the house and fill the courts with bodies. Go out. So they went out and struck people down in the city. While they were killing them, and I was left, I fell on my face and cried out, “Ah, Lord GOD! Will you destroy all the survivors of Israel when you pour out your fury on Jerusalem?” Then he said to me: The wrongdoing of the people of Israel and Judah is very, very great. The land is full of blood and the city is full of crookedness. Because they say: The LORD has left the land, and the LORD doesn't see. So as for me, my eye won't spare and I won't have any pity. I'll bring their way back on their own heads. And there was the man dressed in linen with the writing kit at his side, reporting back: I've done what you ordered me.

Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not. And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head. And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me.
