The rusty pot
And in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, write down the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon has set himself against Jerusalem this very day. Utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them: This is what the Lord GOD says: “Set on a pot, set it on, and pour water into it too. Gather the pieces into it, every good piece — the thigh and the shoulder. Fill it with the pick of the bones. Take the pick of the flock and pile the wood under it too. Make it boil hard, and let them cook the bones in it. So this is what the Lord GOD says: Trouble is coming to the city of blood, to the pot with rust in it, that the rust hasn't gone out of. Bring it out piece by piece. Don't cast lots over it. Because her blood is within her. She put it on the bare rock. She didn't pour it on the ground to cover it with dust. So it'd bring up fury and settle up, I've put her blood on the bare rock so it wouldn't be covered. So this is what the Lord GOD says: Trouble is coming to the city of blood. I'll make the fire pile big too. Heap on the wood, get the fire going, cook the meat well and mix in the spice, and let the bones be burnt. Then set it empty on the coals, so it gets hot and the bronze burns and the filth in it melts and the rust is eaten out. She's worn me out with lies, and her heavy rust hasn't come off her. Her rust will be in the fire. There's wickedness in your filth. Because I've cleaned you and you weren't cleaned, you won't be cleaned of your filth any more till I've made my fury rest on you. I the LORD have spoken it. It's coming, and I'll do it. I won't go back and I won't spare and I won't be sorry for it. They'll judge you by your ways and by your doings, says the Lord GOD.

The next morning I did as I was commanded. The people said to me, “Won’t you tell us what these things mean for us, seeing you are doing them?” Then I answered them, “The LORD spoke to me: Speak to the people of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes and what your soul pities; and your sons and daughters whom you have left will fall by the sword. You will do as I have done: you will not cover your lips or eat the bread of men. Your turbans will be on your heads and your shoes on your feet. You will neither mourn nor weep, but you will pine away for your wrongdoings and mourn one toward another. So Ezekiel is a sign to you. According to everything he has done, you will do. When this comes, you will know that I am the Lord GOD. And you, son of man, on the day I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes and what they set their minds upon, along with their sons and daughters — on that day one who has escaped will come to you to cause you to hear it with your own ears. On that day your mouth will be opened to the one who escaped, and you will speak and be dumb no more. You will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD.”
