Deuteronomy34 chapters · complete

Moses’s three farewell speeches on the plains of Moab before Israel crosses the Jordan without him. He’s a hundred and twenty years old, he knows he won’t make it, and he wants them to get it right. He repeats the Ten Commandments, restates the Shema (‘Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart’), warns them not to forget God when they’re prosperous, and lists blessings and curses in escalating detail. The Song of Moses in chapter 32 is the book’s beating heart. Ends quietly: Moses climbs Nebo, sees the whole land spread out before him, and dies. No one knows where he is buried. No prophet has arisen since who knew the Lord face to face.
