David's reign, and the price of it. He's crowned over all Israel, takes Jerusalem, and gets a promise from God that his throne will last forever — the high point of the whole story. Then it turns. Bathsheba, Uriah's murder, and everything after unravels in the family: a rape covered up, a son's revenge, a rebellion that drives David out of his own city weeping. It doesn't look away from any of it, and by the end you understand exactly why he wrote the psalms he did.
