The eagle and the vine
And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, put a riddle and tell a saying to the people of Israel. And say: This is what the Lord GOD says. A great eagle with big wings and long feathers, full of colours, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar. He cropped off the top of its young shoots and carried it into a land of trade, and set it in a city of merchants. He took some of the seed of the land too and planted it in a fertile field. He set it by great waters and put it in like a willow. And it grew and turned into a spreading vine, low and short, with its branches turned towards him and its roots under him. So it became a vine and brought out branches and put out shoots. And there was another great eagle with big wings and many feathers. And look: this vine bent its roots towards him and put out its branches towards him from the beds where it was planted, so he'd water it. It was planted in a good field by great waters, so it could put out branches and bear fruit and be a good vine. Say: This is what the Lord GOD says. Will it do well? Won't he pull up its roots and cut off its fruit so it withers? It'll wither in all the leaves of its growth, and it won't take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by its roots. Yes, look: it's planted. Will it do well? Won't it wither right off when the east wind touches it? It'll wither in the beds where it grew.

But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt, so they'd give him horses and many men. Will he do well? Will the one who does this escape with it? Will he break the covenant and escape with it? As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, he'll die in Babylon, right there, in the place of the king who made him king — whose oath he made nothing of and whose covenant he broke. And Pharaoh with his mighty army and his big crowd won't do anything for him in the war, when they throw up ramps and build siege walls to cut off many lives. Because he made nothing of the oath by breaking the covenant — and look, he'd given his hand on it, and he did all these things. He won't escape with it. So this is what the Lord GOD says: As surely as I live, I'll bring my oath that he made nothing of back on his own head, and my covenant that he broke. I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and hold him to account there for his unfaithfulness to me. And all those running with him and all his troops will fall by the sword, and those left will be scattered to every wind. And you'll know that I the LORD have spoken it. I'll crop off a tender one from the top of its young shoots, and I'll plant it on a high and lifted-up mountain. And all the trees of the field will know that I the LORD bring down the high tree and lift up the low tree, dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flower. I the LORD have spoken it and done it.
