The cedar in Lebanon

And in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his crowd: Who are you like in your greatness? Look at Assyria — a cedar in Lebanon with beautiful branches and thick shade and great height, and its top was among the thick boughs. The waters made it big. The deep set it up high, running its rivers round where it was planted and sending out its channels to all the trees of the field. So it grew taller than all the trees of the field. Its limbs spread out and its branches grew long because it had plenty of water. Every bird of heaven made its nest in its boughs. Every animal of the field gave birth under its branches, and every great nation lived in its shade. So it was beautiful in its greatness and in the length of its branches, because its root was by many waters. The cedars in the garden of God couldn't hide it. The firs weren't like its boughs, and the plane trees weren't like its branches. No tree in the garden of God was like it in its beauty. I made it beautiful with the number of its branches, so all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God were jealous of it.

And in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his crowd: Who are you like in your greatness? Look at Assyria — a cedar in Lebanon with beautiful branches and thick shade and great height, and its top was among the thick boughs. The waters made it big. The deep set it up high, running its rivers round where it was planted and sending out its channels to all the trees of the field. So its height was lifted above all the trees of the field. Its boughs got bigger and its branches got longer, because of all the water when it put them out. Every bird of the sky made its nest in its boughs. Every animal of the field gave birth under its branches, and every great nation lived in its shade. So it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches, because its root was by plenty of water. The cedars in the garden of God couldn't hide it. I made it beautiful with the number of its branches, so all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God were jealous of it.

And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness? Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs. The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field. Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth. All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations. Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters. The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

Brought down to the pit

So this is what the Lord GOD says: Because it lifted itself so high, pushed its top among the thick branches and became proud of its height, So I've handed it over to the mighty one of the nations. He'll deal with it for sure. I've driven it out for its wickedness. And strangers, the most brutal of the nations, have cut it off and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs are broken by all the streams of the land. And everyone living on the earth has gone down out of its shade and left it. All the birds of heaven will stay on its ruin, and all the animals of the field will be on its branches — So none of the trees by the waters lift themselves up in their height or set their top among the thick boughs, and none of those that drink water stand up in their height. Because they're all handed over to death, to the lowest parts of the earth, among the people, with those who go down to the pit. This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day it went down to the grave I made a mourning. I covered the deep over it and held its rivers back, and the great waters were stopped. And I made Lebanon go into mourning for it, and all the trees of the field fainted for it. I made the nations shake at the sound of its fall, when I threw it down to hell with those who go down to the pit. And all the trees of Eden, the pick and the best of Lebanon, everything that drinks water, were comforted in the lowest parts of the earth. They went down to hell with it too, to those killed by the sword — those who were its arm, who lived in its shade among the nations. Who are you like in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? But you’ll be brought down with the trees of Eden to the lowest parts of the earth. You’ll lie among the uncircumcised with those killed by the sword. That’s Pharaoh and all his crowd, says the Lord GOD.

So this is what the Lord God says: Because you've lifted yourself up in height and it set its top among the thick boughs and its heart was lifted up in its height — so I've handed it over to the mighty one of the nations. He'll deal with it for sure. I've driven it out for its wickedness. And strangers, the most brutal of the nations, have cut it off and left it. Its branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs are broken by all the streams of the land. And all the trees of Eden, the pick and the best of Lebanon, everything that drinks water, were comforted in the lowest parts of the earth. They went down to the grave with it too, to the ones killed by the sword — the ones who were its arm, who lived in its shade in the middle of the nations. Who are you like in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? But you'll be brought down with the trees of Eden to the lowest parts of the earth. You'll lie in the middle of the uncircumcised with the ones killed by the sword. That's Pharaoh and all his crowd, says the Lord God.

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height; I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness. And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him. Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches: To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit. Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him. I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen. To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
