And the LORD spoke to me: What do you mean by using this saying about the land of Israel: The fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge? As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, you won't have any reason to use this saying in Israel any more. Look: every life belongs to me. The father’s life is mine, and the son’s life is mine. The person who sins will die. But if a man is righteous and does what's fair and right — If he hasn't eaten on the mountains or lifted his eyes to the idols of the people of Israel, or made his neighbour's wife unclean, or come near a woman at her time, And hasn't pushed anyone around but gives the debtor his pledge back, and hasn't taken anything by force, and gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothes, Who hasn't lent at interest or taken any increase, who's held his hand back from wrongdoing and done true judgment between man and man, Who's lived by my rules and kept my judgments and dealt truly — he's righteous. He'll live for sure, says the Lord GOD. But if he fathers a son who's a robber and a shedder of blood, and does any one of these things and does what his father never did: eats upon the mountains and defiles his neighbour’s wife, Pushes the poor and needy around, takes things by force, doesn't give back the pledge, lifts his eyes to the idols and does disgusting things, Lends at interest and takes increase — will he live? He won't live. He's done all these disgusting things. He'll die for sure. His blood will be on him. But look: if he fathers a son who sees all his father's sins that he's done, and thinks about it and doesn't do the same — Who hasn't eaten on the mountains or lifted his eyes to the idols of the people of Israel, or made his neighbour's wife unclean, Or pushed anyone around, or held onto a pledge, or taken anything by force, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothes, Who's held his hand off the poor and hasn't taken interest or increase, who's kept my judgments and lived by my rules — he won't die for his father's wrongdoing. He'll live for sure. As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, took his brother’s goods by violence and did what was not good among his people, he will die in his own wrongdoing. But you say: Why doesn't the son carry the father's wrongdoing? When the son has done what's fair and right and kept all my rules and done them, he'll live for sure. The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the wrongdoing of the father, and the father will not bear the wrongdoing of the son. The righteousness of the righteous will be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon him.

As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

But if the wicked turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all my rules and does what is lawful and right, he will surely live; he will not die. None of the wrongdoings he committed will be mentioned to him. In the righteousness he has done, he will live. Do I take any pleasure at all in the death of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Isn’t it rather that he should turn from his ways and live? But when the righteous man turns from his righteousness and does wrong and does all the disgusting things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteousness he's done will be remembered. He'll die in the faith he's broken and in the sin he's sinned. But you say: The LORD's way isn't fair. Listen now, people of Israel — isn't my way fair? Isn't it your ways that aren't fair? When a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does wrong and dies for it, he'll die for the wrong he's done. And when the wicked man turns from the wickedness he's done and does what's fair and right, he'll keep his soul alive. Because he considered and turned away from all the wrongdoings he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die. But the people of Israel say, 'The LORD's way isn't fair.' People of Israel, aren't my ways fair?
