The watchman
And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, speak to your people and tell them: When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take one man from their borders and set him up as their watchman, And he sees the sword coming on the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people — Then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and won't take the warning, and the sword comes and takes him, his blood will be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet and wouldn't take the warning. His blood will be on him. But whoever takes the warning will save his own soul. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and doesn't blow the trumpet, so the people aren't warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them — he's taken in his own wrongdoing, but I'll want his blood from the watchman's hand. “So you, son of man, I have set you as a watchman to the people of Israel. Hear the word from my mouth and warn them from me. When I say to the wicked man, Wicked man, you'll die for sure — and you don't speak to warn the wicked man off his way — that wicked man will die in his wrongdoing, but I'll want his blood from your hand. But if you warn the wicked man off his way to turn from it, and he doesn't turn from his way, he'll die in his wrongdoing. But you've saved your own soul. So you, son of man, say to the people of Israel: You've said this: Our stepping over the line and our sins are on us, and we're wasting away in them. So how can we live? Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways — why will you die, people of Israel?’ So you, son of man, say to your people: The righteousness of the righteous won't get him out on the day he rebels. As for the wickedness of the wicked, he won't fall by it on the day he turns from his wickedness. And the righteous won't be able to live by his righteousness on the day he sins. When I say to the righteous man that he'll live for sure — if he trusts in his own righteousness and does wrong, none of his righteous things will be remembered. He'll die in the wrong he's done. And when I say to the wicked man, You'll die for sure — if he turns from his sin and does what's fair and right, If the wicked man gives back the pledge and pays back what he took by force, and walks in the rules of life without doing wrong — he'll live for sure. He won't die. None of the sins he's done will be remembered against him. He's done what's fair and right. He'll live for sure. But your people say: The LORD's way isn't fair. And it's their way that isn't fair. When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does wrong, he'll die in it. Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

But your people say: The LORD's way isn't fair. And it's their way that isn't fair.

The news comes
In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, someone who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, ‘The city has fallen.’ The hand of the LORD had been upon me in the evening before the escaped man came, and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning. My mouth was opened, and I was no longer dumb. Then the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, those living in those ruined places in the land of Israel are saying: Abraham was only one man, and he owned the land. There's many us — the land is given to us to own. So tell them: This is what the Lord GOD says. You eat with the blood and lift your eyes to your idols and shed blood — and will you own the land? You stand on your sword. You do disgusting things. Every one of you makes his neighbour's wife unclean. And will you own the land? Tell them this: This is what the Lord GOD says. As surely as I live, those in the ruined places will fall by the sword, and I'll hand over the one in the open field to the animals to be eaten, and those in the strongholds and the caves will die of plague. And I'll make the land a waste and a desolation, and the pride of her strength will stop. And the mountains of Israel will be a desolation with nobody going through. And they'll know that I'm the LORD, when I've made the land a waste and a desolation because of all the disgusting things they've done. And you, son of man — your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses. And they say to each other, every man to his brother: Come on and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD. They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people and hear your words, but they will not do them. With their mouths they show much love, but their heart goes after their greed. You are to them like a very lovely song of one with a pleasant voice who can play well on an instrument. They hear your words, but they do not do them. And when this comes — look, it's coming — then they'll know a prophet has been among them.

For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.
