The town of blood

And the LORD spoke to me: Now son of man, will you judge? Will you judge the city of blood? Then make her know all her disgusting things. And say: This is what the Lord GOD says. The city sheds blood within her so her time comes, and makes idols against herself to be filthy with. You've become guilty by the blood you've shed, and made yourself filthy by the idols you've made. And you've brought your days close and come to your years. So I've made you an insult to the nations and something all the countries laugh at. Those near and those far off will laugh at you, you filthy-named city, full of uproar. Look: the princes of Israel have each been out for what they could get in you, to shed blood. In you they've made light of father and mother. Among you they've dealt roughly with the stranger. In you they've pushed the orphan and the widow around. You have despised my holy things and profaned my sabbaths. In you there are men who tell tales to shed blood. In you they eat on the mountains. Among you they do wickedness. In you they've uncovered their father's nakedness. In you they've had women at their unclean time. And one man has committed a disgusting thing with his neighbour's wife, another has shamefully defiled his daughter-in-law, and another in you has humbled his sister, his own father's daughter. In you they've taken bribes to shed blood. You've taken interest and increase, and you've made money out of your neighbours by force, and you've forgotten me, says the Lord GOD. So look: I've clapped my hands at the money you've made dishonestly and at the blood that's been among you. Will your heart stand up, will your hands be strong, in the days when I deal with you? I the LORD have spoken it, and I'll do it. And I'll scatter you among the nations and spread you through the countries, and I'll clear the filth right out of you. You will take your inheritance in yourself in the sight of the nations, and you will know that I am the LORD.

And the word of the Lord came to me: Now son of man, will you judge? Will you judge the town of blood? Then make her know all her disgusting things. And say: This is what the Lord God says. The town sheds blood in the middle of her so her time comes, and makes idols against herself to be filthy with. You've become guilty by the blood you've shed, and made yourself filthy by the idols you've made. And you've brought your days close and come to your years. So I've made you an insult to the nations and something all the countries laugh at. The ones near and the ones far off will laugh at you, you filthy-named town, full of uproar. And I'll scatter you among the nations and spread you through the countries, and I'll clear the filth right out of you. And you'll be treated as common in yourself in front of the eyes of the nations. And you'll know that I'm the Lord.

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations. Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself. Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries. Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed. Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood. In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow. Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths. In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness. In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution. And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter. In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD. Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it. And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.

The furnace

And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, the people of Israel have become slag to me. All of them are bronze, tin, iron and lead in the furnace. They're the slag left from silver. So this is what the Lord GOD says: Because you've all turned into slag, look: I'll gather you into the middle of Jerusalem. The way they gather silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into the middle of the furnace, to blow the fire on it to melt it — that's how I'll gather you in my anger and my fury, and I'll leave you there and melt you. Yes, I'll gather you and blow on you with the fire of my fury, and you'll be melted in the middle of it. The way silver is melted in the middle of the furnace, that's how you'll be melted in the middle of it. And you'll know that I the LORD have poured out my fury on you.

And the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, the house of Israel has turned into slag to me. All of them are bronze and tin and iron and lead in the middle of the furnace. And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you. Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof. As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you.

Nobody in the gap

And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, tell her: You're the land that isn't cleaned and hasn't had rain on the day of anger. There's a plot of her prophets within her, like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They've eaten souls. They've taken treasure and precious things. They've made many widows within her. Her priests have done violence to my teaching and made my holy things common. They haven't put a difference between the holy and the common, and they haven't shown the difference between the unclean and the clean. And they've hidden their eyes from my sabbaths, and I'm made common among them. Her officials within her are like wolves tearing the prey — to shed blood, to destroy souls, to make money dishonestly. And her prophets have whitewashed it for them, seeing empty things and telling them lying fortunes and saying, This is what the Lord GOD says — when the LORD hasn't spoken. The people of the land have crushed people and taken things by force. Yes, they've pushed the poor and needy around and dealt roughly with the stranger, giving them no fair go. And I looked for a man among them to build up the fence and stand in the gap before me for the land, so I wouldn't destroy it — and I found nobody. So I've poured out my anger on them. I've consumed them with the fire of my fury and repaid them for their own ways, says the Lord GOD.

And the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, tell her: You're the land that isn't cleaned and hasn't had rain on the day of anger. There's a plot of her prophets in the middle of her, like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They've eaten souls. They've taken treasure and precious things. They've made plenty of widows in the middle of her. Her priests have done violence to my teaching and made my holy things common. They haven't put a difference between the holy and the common, and they haven't shown the difference between the unclean and the clean. And they've hidden their eyes from my sabbaths, and I'm made common among them. Her officials in the middle of her are like wolves tearing the prey — to shed blood, to wreck souls, to make money dishonestly. And I looked for a man among them to build up the fence and stand in the gap in front of me for the land, so I wouldn't wreck it — and I found nobody. So I've poured out my anger on them. I've finished them with the fire of my fury. I've brought their way back on their own heads, says the Lord God.

And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.
