In Egypt and in the wilderness

And in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to ask the LORD and sat down before me. Then the LORD spoke to me: “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them: This is what the Lord GOD says: Have you come to enquire of me? As I live, says the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.” Will you judge them, son of man? Will you judge them? Make them know the disgusting things their fathers did. And say to them: This is what the Lord GOD says. On the day I chose Israel and lifted my hand to the offspring of the house of Jacob and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt — when I lifted my hand to them and said, I'm the LORD your God — On that day I lifted my hand to them to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land I'd spotted for them, flowing with milk and honey, the best of all lands. Then I said to them: Every man, throw away the disgusting things your eyes are on, and don't make yourselves filthy with the idols of Egypt. I'm the LORD your God. But they rebelled against me and would not listen. No one cast away the disgusting things before their eyes, nor did they abandon the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them there in the land of Egypt. But I acted for the sake of my name, so it wouldn't be treated as common before the nations they were among — those I'd made myself known to before, by bringing them out of the land of Egypt. So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. And I gave them my rules and let them know my judgments — those a man does and lives by. And I gave them my sabbaths too, to be a sign between me and them, so they'd know that I'm the LORD who sets them apart. But the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They didn't live by my rules and they rejected my judgments — those a man does and lives by — and they made my sabbaths very common. Then I said I'd pour out my fury on them in the wilderness to destroy them. But I acted for my name’s sake, so it would not be polluted before the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. But I also lifted my hand to them in the wilderness, that I wouldn't bring them into the land I'd given them, flowing with milk and honey, the best of all lands — Because they rejected my judgments and didn't live by my rules and made my sabbaths common. Because their heart went after their idols. But my eye spared them and I didn't destroy them. I didn't make a full end of them in the wilderness. But I said to their children in the wilderness: Don't live by the rules of your fathers or keep their judgments or make yourselves filthy with their idols. I'm the LORD your God. Live by my rules and keep my judgments and do them, And keep my sabbaths holy. And they'll be a sign between me and you, so you know that I'm the LORD your God. But the children rebelled against me. They did not live by my rules or keep my judgments to do them — which, if a man does, he will live in them — and they polluted my sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness. But I pulled my hand back and acted for the sake of my name, so it wouldn't be treated as common before the nations, those I'd brought them out before. I lifted my hand to them in the wilderness too, that I'd scatter them among the nations and spread them through the countries — Because they hadn't done my judgments but rejected my rules and made my sabbaths common, and their eyes were on their fathers' idols. So I gave them rules that weren't good and judgments they couldn't live by. And I made them filthy in their own gifts, when they made everything that opens the womb go through the fire — so I could make them a desolation, so they'd know that I'm the LORD.

And in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to ask the Lord and sat down in front of me. Then the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and tell them: This is what the Lord God says. Have you come to ask me? Then I said I'd pour out my fury on them to finish my anger on them right there in the land of Egypt. They didn't walk in my rules and they knocked back my judgments — the ones a man does and lives by — and they made my sabbaths very common. Then I said I'd pour out my fury on them in the wilderness to finish them off. But I acted for the sake of my name, so it wouldn't be treated as common in front of the nations, the ones I'd brought them out in front of. But I also lifted my hand to them in the wilderness, that I wouldn't bring them into the land I'd given them, flowing with milk and honey, the best of all lands — because they knocked back my judgments and didn't walk in my rules and made my sabbaths common. Because their heart went after their idols. But my eye spared them and I didn't wreck them. I didn't make a full end of them in the wilderness. But I said to their children in the wilderness: Don't walk in the rules of your fathers or keep their judgments or make yourselves filthy with their idols. I'm the Lord your God. Walk in my rules and keep my judgments and do them, and keep my sabbaths holy. And they'll be a sign between me and you, so you know that I'm the Lord your God. But the children rebelled against me. But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out. Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.

King James Version, 1611

Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.

23

I lifted my hand to them in the wilderness too, that I'd scatter them among the nations and spread them through the countries —

King James Version, 1611

I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries;

Because they hadn't done my judgments but rejected my rules and made my sabbaths common, and their eyes were on their fathers' idols.

25

So I gave them rules that weren't good and judgments they couldn't live by.

King James Version, 1611

Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;

King James Version, 1611

And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the LORD.

What you say won't happen

So speak to the people of Israel, son of man, and tell them: This is what the Lord GOD says. Your fathers insulted me in this too, by breaking faith with me. Because when I'd brought them into the land I'd lifted my hand to give them, then they looked at every high hill and every thick tree, and they offered their sacrifices there and brought their stirring offerings there. They put their sweet aromas there and poured out their drink offerings there. Then I said to them: What's this high place you go to? And its name is called Bamah to this day. So tell the people of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says. Are you making yourselves filthy the way your fathers did, and going whoring after the disgusting things they had? When you offer your gifts and make your sons pass through the fire, you pollute yourselves with all your idols to this day. And should I be enquired of by you, people of Israel? As I live, says the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you. And what comes into your mind won't happen at all — that you say, We'll be like the nations, like the families of the countries, serving wood and stone. As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, I'll rule over you with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with fury poured out. And I'll bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries you're scattered in, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with fury poured out. I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will plead with you face to face. The way I took it up with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, that's how I'll take it up with you, says the Lord GOD. And I'll make you go under the rod, and I'll bring you into the bond of the covenant. And I'll clear out the rebels from among you, and those who step over the line against me. I'll bring them out of the country where they're living, and they won't come into the land of Israel. And you'll know that I'm the LORD. As for you, people of Israel — this is what the Lord GOD says. Go and serve your idols, every one of you, now and later, if you won't listen to me. But don't make my holy name common any more with your gifts and your idols. Because on my holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel, says the Lord GOD, that's where the whole people of Israel, all of them in the land, will serve me. That's where I'll accept them, and that's where I'll want your offerings and the first of your gifts, with all your holy things. I'll accept you with a pleasing aroma when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries you've been scattered in. And my holiness will be shown through you before the eyes of the nations. And you'll know that I'm the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the country I lifted my hand to give your fathers. And you'll remember your ways there, and everything you did that made you filthy. And you'll loathe yourselves in your own sight for all the evils you've done. And you'll know that I'm the LORD, when I've dealt with you for my name's sake and not according to your wicked ways or your rotten doings, people of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

So speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and tell them: This is what the Lord God says. Your fathers insulted me in this too, by breaking faith with me. Because when I'd brought them into the land I'd lifted my hand to give them, then they looked at every high hill and every thick tree, and they offered their sacrifices there and brought their stirring offerings there. They put their pleasing smells there and poured out their drink offerings there. Then I said to them: What's this high place you go to? And its name is called Bamah to this day. So tell the house of Israel: This is what the Lord God says. Are you making yourselves filthy the way your fathers did, and going whoring after the disgusting things they had? When you bring your gifts, when you make your sons go through the fire, you make yourselves filthy with all your idols right up to this day. And should I be asked by you, house of Israel? As surely as I live, says the Lord God, I won't be asked by you. And I'll bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and I'll take it up with you there face to face. And I'll make you go under the rod, and I'll bring you into the bond of the covenant. And I'll clear out the rebels from among you, and the ones who step over the line against me. I'll bring them out of the country where they're living, and they won't come into the land of Israel. And you'll know that I'm the Lord. As for you, house of Israel — this is what the Lord God says. Go and serve your idols, every one of you, now and later, if you won't listen to me. But don't make my holy name common any more with your gifts and your idols. Because on my holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel, says the Lord God, that's where the whole house of Israel, all of them in the land, will serve me. That's where I'll accept them, and that's where I'll want your offerings and the first of your gifts, with all your holy things. I'll accept you with a pleasing smell when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries you've been scattered in. And I'll be made holy in you in front of the eyes of the nations. And you'll know that I'm the Lord, when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the country I lifted my hand to give your fathers. And you'll remember your ways there, and everything you did that made you filthy. And you'll loathe yourselves in your own sight for all the evils you've done. And you'll know that I'm the Lord, when I've dealt with you for my name's sake and not according to your wicked ways or your rotten doings, house of Israel, says the Lord God.

Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me. For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings. Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name thereof is called Bamah unto this day. Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations? For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you. And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols. For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things. I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers. And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed. And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name’s sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

The fire in the south

And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, set your face towards the south and drop your word towards the south, and prophesy against the forest of the field in the south. And say to the forest of the south: Listen to the word of the LORD. This is what the Lord GOD says. Look: I'll light a fire in you, and it'll eat every green tree in you and every dry tree. The blazing flame won't be put out, and every face from the south to the north will be scorched in it. And all flesh will see that I the LORD have lit it. It won't be put out. Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! They say of me, ‘Isn’t he just speaking parables?’”
