The men who give bad counsel

Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the LORD's house, the one facing east. And there at the door of the gate were twenty-five men, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, princes of the people. And he said to me: Son of man, these are the men who think up wrongdoing and give bad counsel in this city — Who say: It's not close. Let's build houses. This city is the pot and we're the meat. So prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man. And the Spirit of the LORD fell on me and said to me: Say, This is what the LORD says. That's what you've said, people of Israel. And I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them. You've killed many people in this city and filled its streets with bodies. So this is what the Lord GOD says: The people you've killed and left in the city are the meat, and this city is the pot. But I'll bring you out of it. You've been frightened of the sword, and I'll bring a sword on you, says the Lord GOD. And I'll bring you out of it and hand you over to strangers, and I'll do judgments among you. You'll fall by the sword. I'll judge you at the border of Israel, and you'll know that I'm the LORD. This city won't be your pot, and you won't be the meat in the middle of it. I'll judge you at the border of Israel. And you'll know that I'm the LORD — because you haven't lived by my rules or done my judgments, but you've done what the nations round you do. While I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried with a loud voice, “Ah, Lord GOD! Will you make a full end of the survivors of Israel?”

Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord's house, the one facing east. And there at the door of the gate were twenty-five men, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people. And he said to me: Son of man, these are the men who think up wrongdoing and give bad counsel in this town — who say: It's not close. Let's build houses. This town is the pot and we're the meat. So prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man. And the Spirit of the Lord fell on me and said to me: Say, This is what the Lord says. That's what you've said, house of Israel. And I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them. You've made your killed many in this town, and you've filled its streets with the killed. So this is what the Lord God says: Your killed that you've laid in the middle of it, they're the meat and this is the pot. But I'll bring you out of the middle of it. You've been frightened of the sword, and I'll bring a sword on you, says the Lord God. And I'll bring you out of the middle of it and hand you over to strangers, and I'll do judgments among you. You'll fall by the sword. I'll judge you at the border of Israel, and you'll know that I'm the Lord. This town won't be your pot, and you won't be the meat in the middle of it. I'll judge you at the border of Israel. And you'll know that I'm the Lord — because you haven't walked in my rules or done my judgments, but you've done what the nations round you do. And while I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice and said: Hang on, Lord God — are you going to make a full end of everything left of Israel?

Moreover the spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of the LORD’s house, which looketh eastward: and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men; among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people. Then said he unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise mischief, and give wicked counsel in this city: Which say, It is not near; let us build houses: this city is the caldron, and we be the flesh. Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man. And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them. Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh, and this city is the caldron: but I will bring you forth out of the midst of it. Ye have feared the sword; and I will bring a sword upon you, saith the Lord GOD. And I will bring you out of the midst thereof, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you. Ye shall fall by the sword; I will judge you in the border of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. This city shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; but I will judge you in the border of Israel: And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you. And it came to pass, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and cried with a loud voice, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

A heart of flesh

And the LORD spoke to me: Son of man, your brothers, your own brothers, the men you're related to, and the whole people of Israel — all of them — are those the people of Jerusalem have said to: Get right away from the LORD. This land was given to us to own. So say: This is what the Lord GOD says. Though I've sent them a long way off among the nations, and though I've scattered them through the countries, I've still been a sanctuary for them for a little while in the countries they've gone to. So say: This is what the Lord GOD says. I'll gather you from the peoples and bring you together out of the countries you've been scattered in, and I'll give you the land of Israel. And they'll come there and take away all its rotten things and all its disgusting things out of it. I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, so they may live by my rules, keep my rules and do them. They will be my people, and I will be their God. But as for those whose heart walks after their rotten things and their disgusting things, I'll bring their way back on their own heads, says the Lord GOD. Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them. The glory of the LORD went up from within the city and stood on the mountain east of the city. Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God to the exiles in Chaldea. Then the vision I'd seen went up from me. So I told the exiles everything the LORD had shown me.

And the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, your brothers, your own brothers, the men you're related to, and the whole house of Israel — all of them — are the ones the people of Jerusalem have said to: Get right away from the Lord. So I told the exiles everything the Lord had shown me.

Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel wholly, are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Get you far from the LORD: unto us is this land given in possession. Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. And they shall come thither, and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD. And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city. Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me. Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that the LORD had shewed me.
