The people want to go back
That night the whole community raised their voices and cried, and the people wept through the night. All the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron. The whole community said, 'If only we had died in Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!' 'Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will become prey. Wouldn't we be better off going back to Egypt?' They said to one another, 'Let's appoint a captain and head back to Egypt.' Moses and Aaron fell face down before the whole assembled community of Israel. Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who had been among those who spied out the land, tore their clothes. They said to all the Israelites: The land we travelled through and explored is a really good land. 'If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us — a land flowing with milk and honey.' Only don't rebel against the Lord, and don't be afraid of the people of the land. They're easy pickings for us. Their protection is gone, and the Lord is with us. Don't be afraid of them. But the whole community said they should stone them. Then the glory of the Lord appeared in the tent of meeting before all the Israelites. The Lord said to Moses, 'How long will these people provoke me? How long will they refuse to believe me, after all the signs I have shown among them?' 'I will strike them with disease and disinherit them, and I will make of you a greater and mightier nation than they are.' Moses said to the Lord, 'Then the Egyptians will hear about it, because by your power you brought these people up from among them.' They will tell the people of this land. They've heard that you, Lord, are among this people — that you, Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. So if you kill all this people as one man, then the nations who've heard the news about you will say: Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to them, he's killed them in the wilderness. 'Now, I beg you, let the power of my Lord be great, just as you have spoken:' 'The Lord is slow to anger and great in mercy, forgiving wrongdoing, but by no means clearing the guilty, dealing with the wrongdoing of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.' 'Pardon, I beg you, the wrongdoing of these people according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now.' The Lord said, 'I have pardoned them according to your word.'

And the whole gathering said to them: If only we'd died in the land of Egypt, or if only we'd died in this wilderness. And why has the Lord brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, so our wives and our children are plunder? Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt? They've heard that you, Lord, are among this people — that you, Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. So if you kill all this people as one man, then the nations who've heard the news about you will say: Because the Lord wasn't able to bring this people into the land he swore to them, he's killed them in the wilderness. So now, please, let the strength of my Lord be great, the way you've spoken: The Lord is slow to anger and full of great mercy, forgiving wrongdoing and stepping over the line, and by no means letting the guilty off, dealing with the wrongdoing of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation. Forgive the wrongdoing of this people, please, according to the greatness of your mercy, and the way you've forgiven this people from Egypt right up till now. And the Lord said: I've forgiven them, the way you asked.

And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel. And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my LORD be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

And why has the Lord brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, so our wives and our children are plunder? Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?
And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
They said to one another, 'Let's appoint a captain and head back to Egypt.'

Moses and Aaron fell face down before the whole assembled community of Israel.

'But as truly as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord.' 'Because all those men have seen my glory and the signs I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tested me these ten times and have not listened to my voice,' 'they will not see the land I swore to their fathers. None of those who provoked me will see it.' 'But my servant Caleb has a different spirit in him and has followed me wholeheartedly. I will bring him into the land he entered, and his descendants will possess it.' Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valley. Tomorrow turn and get yourselves into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 'How long must I put up with this evil community complaining against me? I have heard the complaints the Israelites make against me.' 'Tell them: As truly as I live, says the Lord, just as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.' 'Your carcasses will fall in this wilderness — every one of you numbered from twenty years old and upward who has complained against me.' 'You will not come into the land I swore to make you live in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.' Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
'Your carcasses will fall in this wilderness — every one of you numbered from twenty years old and upward who has complained against me.'
Your bodies will fall in this wilderness — all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and up, who've grumbled against me.

Beaten at Hormah
The men Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by bringing a bad report of the land — Even those men who brought the bad report of the land died of the plague before the Lord. But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of the men who went to spy out the land, were still alive. Moses told these words to all the Israelites, and the people mourned greatly. They rose early the next morning and went to the top of the mountain, saying, 'We are here. We will go up to the place the Lord promised, because we have sinned.' Moses said, 'Why are you now breaking the Lord's command? This will not succeed.' 'Do not go up, because the Lord is not among you. You will be struck down before your enemies.' 'The Amalekites and Canaanites are there ahead of you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.' But they presumed to go up to the hilltop anyway. Moses and the ark of the covenant of the Lord did not leave the camp. Then the Amalekites and Canaanites living in that hill country came down, struck them and chased them as far as Hormah.
And the men Moses sent to spy out the land, who came back and made the whole gathering grumble against him by bringing a bad report of the land — even those men who brought the bad report of the land died of the plague in front of the Lord. And they got up early in the morning and went up to the top of the hill: Look, we're here, and we'll go up to the place the Lord promised. Because we've sinned. And Moses said: Why are you stepping over the order of the Lord? It won't go well. Don't go up, because the Lord isn't among you, so you don't get struck down in front of the ones against you. Because the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there in front of you, and you'll fall by the sword. Because you've turned away from the Lord, so the Lord won't be with you. But they went proudly up to the top of the hill. But the ark of the covenant of the Lord and Moses didn't leave the camp. Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that hill, and struck them and beat them down right to Hormah.
And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly. And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
The men Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by bringing a bad report of the land —

And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
Even those men who brought the bad report of the land died of the plague before the Lord.

Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of the men who went to spy out the land, were still alive.
But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
Moses told these words to all the Israelites, and the people mourned greatly.

They rose early the next morning and went to the top of the mountain, saying, 'We are here. We will go up to the place the Lord promised, because we have sinned.'

And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
'Do not go up, because the Lord is not among you. You will be struck down before your enemies.'

Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
'The Amalekites and Canaanites are there ahead of you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.'
Because the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there in front of you, and you'll fall by the sword. Because you've turned away from the Lord, so the Lord won't be with you.
For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
But they presumed to go up to the hilltop anyway. Moses and the ark of the covenant of the Lord did not leave the camp.
But they went proudly up to the top of the hill. But the ark of the covenant of the Lord and Moses didn't leave the camp.

Then the Amalekites and Canaanites living in that hill country came down, struck them and chased them as far as Hormah.
