Korah's rebellion
Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, joined with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben. They rose up against Moses with two hundred and fifty leaders of the community — well-known men, representatives of the assembly. They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said, 'You've taken too much on yourselves. The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. So why do you lift yourselves above the community of the Lord?' When Moses heard it, he fell face down. He spoke to Korah and all his company: 'Tomorrow morning the Lord will show who belongs to him, who is holy, and who he will allow to come near him. The one he chooses, he will bring near to himself.' Do this: Take censers, Korah and all your crowd, And put fire in them and put incense in them before the Lord tomorrow. And the man the Lord chooses will be the holy one. You take too much on yourselves, you sons of Levi. Moses said to Korah, 'Listen now, you sons of Levi.' 'Is it a small thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the community of Israel, brought you near to himself to do the service of the Lord's tent, and allowed you to stand before the community to minister to them?' 'He has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you — and now you want the priesthood as well?' 'That is why you and all your company have gathered against the Lord. What has Aaron done that you complain against him?' Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, but they said, 'We will not come up.' 'Is it a small thing that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Now you want to make yourself a prince over us as well?' 'What's more, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us fields and vineyards. Are you going to put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.' Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, 'Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, and I have not harmed a single one of them.' Moses said to Korah: Be before the Lord tomorrow, you and all your crowd, you and them and Aaron. Every man take his censer and put incense in it, and bring each man his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers — you and Aaron too, each with his censer. Every man took his censer and put fire in them and laid incense on them, and stood in the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. Korah gathered the whole community against them at the door of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the Lord showed itself to the whole community. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 'Separate yourselves from this community, so I may consume them in a moment.' They fell face down and said, 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, will one man sin and you be angry with the whole community?' The Lord spoke to Moses: 'Tell the community to move away from around the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. He spoke to the community: 'Get away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything of theirs, or you may be consumed in all their sins.' So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little children. Moses said, 'This is how you will know the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that I have not acted out of my own mind.' 'If these men die an ordinary death like everyone else, or experience only what happens to everyone, then the Lord has not sent me.' 'But if the Lord does a new thing and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything belonging to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you will know these men have provoked the Lord.'

And they gathered together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them: You take too much on yourselves, seeing the whole gathering is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. So why do you lift yourselves up above the gathering of the Lord? And when Moses heard it, he fell on his face. And he spoke to Korah and to all his crowd: Tomorrow the Lord will show who's his and who's holy, and will make him come near to him. The one he chooses he'll make come near to him. Do this: Take censers, Korah and all your crowd, and put fire in them and put incense in them in front of the Lord tomorrow. And the man the Lord chooses will be the holy one. You take too much on yourselves, you sons of Levi. And Moses said to Korah: Listen now, you sons of Levi. Is it a small thing to you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the gathering of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tent of the Lord and to stand in front of the gathering to serve them? And he's brought you near to him, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you. And are you looking for the priesthood too? So you and all your crowd are gathered together against the Lord. And what's Aaron, that you grumble against him? And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. And they said: We won't come up. Is it a small thing that you've brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you have to make yourself a ruler over us too? What's more, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We won't come up. And Moses was very angry and said to the Lord: Don't look at their offering. I haven't taken one donkey from them, and I haven't hurt one of them. And Moses said to Korah: Be in front of the Lord tomorrow, you and all your crowd, you and them and Aaron. And every man take his censer and put incense in it, and bring each man his censer in front of the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers — you and Aaron too, each with his censer. And every man took his censer and put fire in them and laid incense on them, and stood in the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. And Korah gathered the whole gathering against them at the door of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the Lord showed itself to the whole gathering. And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron: Separate yourselves from this gathering, so I can finish them in a moment. And they fell on their faces and said: God, the God of the spirits of all flesh — will one man sin, and you'll be angry with the whole gathering? And the Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the gathering: Get away from round the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. And Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram. And the elders of Israel went after him. And he spoke to the gathering: Get away from the tents of these wicked men, please, and don't touch anything of theirs, so you aren't finished off in all their sins. So they got away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little children. And Moses said: By this you'll know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that I haven't done them out of my own mind. If these men die the death of all men, or if they're dealt with the way all men are dealt with, then the Lord hasn't sent me. But if the Lord makes a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with everything of theirs, and they go down alive into the pit — then you'll understand that these men have insulted the Lord.
Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown: And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD? And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face: And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him. This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company; And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi. And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them? And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also? For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him? And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up: Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us? Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up. And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them. And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow: And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer. And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron. And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation? And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children. And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind. If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me. But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

When Moses heard it, he fell face down.

Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
'He has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you — and now you want the priesthood as well?'
And he's brought you near to him, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you. And are you looking for the priesthood too?
And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?
'That is why you and all your company have gathered against the Lord. What has Aaron done that you complain against him?'
So you and all your crowd are gathered together against the Lord. And what's Aaron, that you grumble against him?

'Separate yourselves from this community, so I may consume them in a moment.'

They fell face down and said, 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, will one man sin and you be angry with the whole community?'
And they fell on their faces and said: God, the God of the spirits of all flesh — will one man sin, and you'll be angry with the whole gathering?
And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?
The Lord spoke to Moses:

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
'Tell the community to move away from around the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.'
Speak to the gathering: Get away from round the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.
Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
And Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram. And the elders of Israel went after him.
And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
He spoke to the community: 'Get away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything of theirs, or you may be consumed in all their sins.'
And he spoke to the gathering: Get away from the tents of these wicked men, please, and don't touch anything of theirs, so you aren't finished off in all their sins.
And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.
So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little children.
So they got away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little children.
So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.
Moses said, 'This is how you will know the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that I have not acted out of my own mind.'
And Moses said: By this you'll know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that I haven't done them out of my own mind.
And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.
'If these men die an ordinary death like everyone else, or experience only what happens to everyone, then the Lord has not sent me.'
If these men die the death of all men, or if they're dealt with the way all men are dealt with, then the Lord hasn't sent me.

But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.
The ground opens
As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground split open beneath them. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, all the men belonging to Korah, and all their goods. They and everything belonging to them went down alive into the pit. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the community. All Israel around them fled at their cry, saying, 'The earth will swallow us too!' Fire came out from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who offered incense. The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, to take up the censers out of the burning and scatter the fire some distance away, because they are holy. The censers of these sinners against their own souls — let them make them into broad plates for a covering of the altar. Because they offered them before the Lord, so they are holy. They will be a sign to the Israelites. Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers those who were burnt had offered, and they were beaten out for a covering of the altar, To be a reminder to the Israelites that no stranger who isn't of the offspring of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the Lord — so he doesn't end up like Korah and his crowd, as the Lord said to him through Moses.
And as soon as he'd finished saying all these words, the ground split apart under them. And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households and all the men who belonged to Korah, and everything they had. They and everything of theirs went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. And they were gone from among the gathering. And all Israel round them ran at their cry, because they said: The earth might swallow us up too. And a fire came out from the Lord and ate up the two hundred and fifty men who offered incense. And the Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, to take up the censers out of the burning and scatter the fire a way off, because they're holy. The censers of these sinners against their own souls — let them make them into broad plates for a covering of the altar. Because they offered them in front of the Lord, so they're holy. And they'll be a sign to the people of Israel. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed. The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel. And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar: To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.
As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground split open beneath them.

And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, all the men belonging to Korah, and all their goods.

And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
Fire came out from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who offered incense.
And a fire came out from the Lord and ate up the two hundred and fifty men who offered incense.
And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.

The plague stopped
But the next day the whole community of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron: 'You have killed the people of the Lord.' The Lord spoke to Moses: 'Get away from this community, so I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell face down. Moses said to Aaron, 'Take a censer, put fire from the altar in it, add incense, and hurry to the community to make atonement for them. Anger has gone out from the Lord; the plague has begun.' Aaron took it as Moses commanded and ran into the middle of the community. The plague had already begun among the people. He put on incense and made atonement for the people. He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped. Fourteen thousand seven hundred died in the plague, besides those who died because of Korah. Then Aaron returned to Moses at the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague had been stopped.
