The people complain
The people began complaining, and the Lord heard it. His anger was kindled, and fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some on the outskirts of the camp. The people called out to Moses. Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire died down. He named that place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them. Then the mixed multitude among them gave in to craving, and the Israelites started carrying on again: 'Who's going to give us meat to eat?' 'We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt — the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.' 'But now we are wasting away. There is nothing to look at except this manna.' The manna was like coriander seed, and its colour like the colour of gum resin. The people went about and gathered it and ground it in mills or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans and made cakes of it. And it tasted like fresh oil. When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna fell on it. Moses heard the people weeping family by family, each at the entrance of his tent. The Lord's anger burned fiercely, and Moses was fed up as well. Moses said to the Lord, 'Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to deserve the burden of all these people being dumped on me?' 'Did I conceive all these people? Did I give birth to them? Why tell me to carry them in my arms like a nursing father carries a sucking child, all the way to the land you promised their fathers?' 'Where am I supposed to get meat for all these people? They keep weeping at me, saying, “Give us meat to eat.”' 'I cannot carry all these people by myself. It is too much for me.' 'If this is how you are going to deal with me, then if you are pleased with me, kill me now and spare me from seeing my own misery.'

Where can I get meat to give all this people? Because they weep on me: Give us meat, so we can eat. I can't carry all this people on my own, because it's too heavy for me. And if you deal with me like this, kill me right off, please, if I've found favour in your eyes. And don't let me see how bad it is for me.

Seventy elders
The Lord said to Moses, 'Gather seventy men from the elders of Israel — men you know to be elders and officers of the people. Bring them to the tent of meeting and have them stand there with you.' 'I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will help carry the burden of the people so you do not have to carry it alone.' Tell the people: Make yourselves holy for tomorrow, and you will eat meat. The Lord heard you weeping and saying, “Who will give us meat? We were better off in Egypt.” So the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it. 'You will not eat it for one day, or two, or five, or ten, or twenty,' 'but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes disgusting to you — because you have despised the Lord who is among you and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”' Moses said, 'There are six hundred thousand footmen among the people I am with, and you say, “I will give them meat to eat for a whole month.”' 'Would there be enough if every flock and herd were slaughtered? Would there be enough if all the fish in the sea were gathered for them?' The Lord said to Moses, 'Has the Lord's hand grown short? You are about to see whether my word comes true or not.' Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He gathered seventy of the elders and placed them around the tent. The Lord came down in a cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. When the spirit rested on them, they prophesied, and did not cease. But two men, Eldad and Medad, had stayed in the camp. They were among those registered but had not gone out to the tent. The spirit rested on them too, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!' Joshua son of Nun, Moses' servant from his youth, said, 'My lord Moses, stop them.' Moses said, 'Are you jealous for my sake? I wish all the Lord's people were prophets and that the Lord would put his spirit on every one of them.' Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!
Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
And Moses went back into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

The quail
A wind went out from the Lord and drove quail in from the sea, dropping them around the camp for about a day's journey in every direction, roughly two cubits deep over the ground. The people were up all that day, all night and all the next day gathering quail. No one gathered less than ten homers. They spread them out all around the camp. But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the Lord's anger was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck them with a very great plague. He called that place Kibrothhattaavah, because there they buried the people who had given in to craving. From Kibrothhattaavah the people travelled to Hazeroth, and they stayed at Hazeroth.
