Balak sends for Balaam
The Israelites moved on and camped in the plains of Moab on the other side of Jordan from Jericho. Balak son of Zippor saw everything Israel had done to the Amorites. Moab was terrified of the people because there were so many of them, and Moab was distressed because of the Israelites. Moab said to the elders of Midian, 'This mob will lick up everything around us like an ox licking up grass in the field.' Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, by the river in the land of his people, to call him: 'A people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth and have settled right opposite me.' 'Come now and curse this people for me, because they are too powerful for me. Maybe then I can defeat them and drive them out of the land. I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.' The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went with the payment for fortune-telling in their hand. They came to Balaam and told him the words of Balak. He said to them: Stay here tonight, and I will bring you word back as the Lord speaks to me. And the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam. God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men with you?' Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me:' '“A people has come out of Egypt and covers the face of the earth. Come and curse them for me. Maybe I will be able to overcome them and drive them out.”' God said to Balaam, 'Do not go with them. You must not curse the people, because they are blessed.' Balaam rose in the morning and said to the leaders of Balak: Go back to your land, because the Lord will not let me go with you. The leaders of Moab rose and went to Balak and said: Balaam will not come with us. Balak sent leaders again, more of them and more honoured than the others. They came to Balaam and said to him: This is what Balak son of Zippor says. Don't let anything stop you coming to me, please. Because I will lift you up to great honour, and I will do whatever you say to me. So come, please, and curse this people for me. Balaam answered Balak's servants, 'Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.' So now, please, stay here tonight too, so I know what more the Lord will say to me. God came to Balaam at night and said, 'If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them — but only do what I tell you.' Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab.

And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out. And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me: For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more. And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

But the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path of the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she pushed herself into the wall and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall. He struck her again. The angel of the Lord went further and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn to the right or the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam's anger was kindled, and he beat the donkey with a staff. The Lord opened the donkey's mouth, and she said to Balaam, 'What have I done to you that you have hit me these three times?' Balaam said to the donkey, 'Because you have mocked me. If I had a sword in my hand right now, I would kill you.' The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your own donkey, the one you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever behaved like this with you?' He said, 'No.' Then the Lord opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. Balaam bowed his head and fell flat on his face. The angel of the Lord said, 'Why have you struck your donkey these three times? I came out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me.' 'The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned aside, I would have killed you by now and spared her.' Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road against me. If this displeases you, I will go back.' The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, 'Go with the men, but speak only the word I tell you.' So Balaam went with Balak's princes.

Balaam said to the donkey, 'Because you have mocked me. If I had a sword in my hand right now, I would kill you.'
And Balaam said to the donkey: Because you've made a joke of me. If only I had a sword in my hand — I'd kill you right now.
And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your own donkey, the one you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever behaved like this with you?' He said, 'No.'

'The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned aside, I would have killed you by now and spared her.'

And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road against me. If this displeases you, I will go back.'
And Balaam said to the angel of the Lord: I've sinned, because I didn't know you were standing in the way against me. So now, if it's bad in your eyes, I'll go back.
And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, 'Go with the men, but speak only the word I tell you.' So Balaam went with Balak's princes.
And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam: Go with the men. But only speak the word I tell you. So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.
And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
Balaam comes to Balak
When Balak heard Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at a town of Moab on the border of Arnon, at the far edge of the border. Balak said to Balaam: Did not I definitely send to you to call you? Why did not you come to me? Am I not able to lift you up to honour? Balaam said to Balak: I have come to you. Do I have any power at all to say anything? The word God puts in my mouth, that is what I will speak. Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjathhuzoth. Balak offered oxen and sheep and sent them to Balaam and to the leaders with him. The next day Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the worship shrines of Baal, so he could see from there the edge of the people.
