The twelve spies
The Lord spoke to Moses: 'Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. Send one man from each ancestral tribe, every one a ruler among them.' Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command of the Lord. All those men were heads of the Israelites. And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur. Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori. Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh. Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph. Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea son of Nun. Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu. Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi. Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi. These are the names of the men Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Oshea son of Nun Jehoshua. Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said, 'Head up through the south, then go up into the mountains.' 'See what the land is like and whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many.' 'See whether the land they live in is good or bad, and whether their towns are open camps or fortified strongholds.' 'See whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees there. Be brave, and bring back some of the fruit of the land.' It was the season of the first ripe grapes.
And the Lord spoke to Moses: Send men to spy out the land of Canaan that I'm giving the people of Israel. You'll send one man from every tribe of their fathers, each one a leader among them. And see the land, what it is, and the people who live in it, whether they're strong or weak, few or many. And what the land is like that they live in, whether it's good or bad. And what the towns are like that they live in, whether in tents or in strongholds. And what the land is like, whether it's rich or poor, whether there's wood in it or not. And be brave and bring some of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.

The report
So they headed up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. They headed up by the south and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. They came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down a branch there with one cluster of grapes. They carried it between two of them on a pole, and some of the pomegranates and of the figs. That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut down from there. After forty days they returned from spying out the land. They came to Moses, Aaron and the whole community at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They brought back word to them and showed them the fruit of the land. They told Moses, 'We came to the land you sent us to. It really does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.' 'But the people who live there are strong, the cities are walled and very large, and we also saw the children of Anak there.' The Amalekites live in the land of the south. And the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites live in the hills. And the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan. Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, 'We should go up at once and take possession of it. We are well able to overcome it.' But the men who had gone up with him said, 'We cannot go up against those people. They are stronger than we are.' They spread a bad report among the Israelites about the land they had explored, saying, 'The land we travelled through devours its people, and all the people we saw there were men of great stature.' 'We saw the giants there, the sons of Anak, who come from the giants. We looked like grasshoppers to ourselves, and that is how we looked to them.'
So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. And they went up by the south and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. That place was called the Valley of Eshkol, because of the cluster of grapes the people of Israel cut down from there. And they came back from searching the land after forty days. And they went and came to Moses and to Aaron and to the whole gathering of the people of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh. And they brought back word to them and to the whole gathering, and showed them the fruit of the land. And they told him: We came to the land you sent us to, and it's flowing with milk and honey for sure. And this is its fruit. But the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are walled and very big. And what's more, we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the land of the south. And the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites live in the hills. And the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan. And Caleb quieted the people in front of Moses and said: Let's go up at once and take it, because we're well able to beat it. But the men who went up with him said: We can't go up against the people, because they're stronger than us. And they brought back a bad report of the land they'd spied out to the people of Israel: The land we've gone through to spy it out is a land that eats up the people living in it. And all the people we saw in it are big men. And we saw the giants there, the sons of Anak, who come of the giants. And in our own eyes we were like grasshoppers, and that's what we were in their eyes.
So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath. And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs. The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence. And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
