The request
The children of Reuben and Gad had a huge number of cattle. When they saw the land of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that it was excellent country for livestock. The children of Gad and Reuben came to Moses, Eleazar the priest and the princes of the community. Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Shebam and Nebo and Beon, The country the Lord struck before the community of Israel, is a land for cattle. And your servants have cattle. They said, 'If you are pleased with us, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.' Moses said to the children of Gad and Reuben, 'Are your brothers supposed to go to war while you sit here?' 'Why would you discourage the Israelites from crossing into the land the Lord has given them?' 'That is exactly what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.' 'They went up to the valley of Eshcol, saw the land, and discouraged the Israelites so they would not enter the land the Lord had given them.' 'The Lord's anger was kindled that day, and he swore:' '“None of the men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, because they have not followed me wholeheartedly,' 'except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenezite and Joshua son of Nun, because they have followed the Lord wholeheartedly.”' 'The Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until that entire generation that had done evil in the Lord's sight was consumed.' 'And now you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel.' 'If you turn away from following him, he will leave them in the wilderness again, and you will destroy all these people.'

The agreement
They came near to Moses and said, 'We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones.' 'But we ourselves will go armed ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Our little ones will live in fortified cities because of the people of the land.' 'We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance.' Because we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan or beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward. Moses said to them, 'If you do this — if you arm yourselves before the Lord for war,' 'and every armed man among you crosses the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven out his enemies,' 'then when the land is subdued before the Lord, you may return. You will be guiltless before the Lord and before Israel, and this land will be your possession before the Lord.' 'But if you do not do this, you have sinned against the Lord — and be sure your sin will find you out.' 'Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and then do what you have promised.' The children of Gad and Reuben said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord commands.' Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and all our cattle will be there in the towns of Gilead. But your servants will go over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord says. So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the chief fathers of the tribes of Israel. Moses told them, 'If the children of Gad and Reuben cross the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then give them the land of Gilead as a possession.' But if they will not go over with you armed, they will have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. The children of Gad and Reuben answered, 'As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do.' We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, so the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Jordan will be ours.

And this land will be yours to own in front of the Lord. But if you won't do that, look — you've sinned against the Lord. And know that your sin will find you out. The land they took

The sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, And Atroth Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah, And Bethnimrah and Bethharan, fortified towns, and folds for sheep. The sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim, And Nebo and Baalmeon, with their names changed, and Shibmah. They gave other names to the towns they built. The children of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it and dispossessed the Amorite who was there. Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he lived there. Jair son of Manasseh went and took its small towns and called them Havothjair. Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah after his own name.

And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim, and Nebo and Baal Meon, with their names changed, and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the towns they built. And the sons of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and drove out the Amorite who was in it. And Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. And Jair son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them Havoth Jair. And Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
