The water at Meribah

The whole community of Israel came into the desert of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there. There was no water for the community, so they gathered against Moses and Aaron. The people argued with Moses: 'If only we had died when our brothers died before the Lord!' 'Why have you brought the community of the Lord into this wilderness, so we and our cattle can die here?' 'Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this miserable place? There is no grain, no figs, no vines, no pomegranates — and not even water to drink.' Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the community to the door of the tent of meeting and fell face down. The glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses: 'Take the rod. You and your brother Aaron gather the community together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water. You will bring water out of the rock for them and give the community and their animals something to drink.' Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he had commanded him. Moses and Aaron gathered the community before the rock. Moses said, 'Listen now, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?' Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod. Water came out abundantly, and the community and their animals drank. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe me and honour me as holy in the eyes of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I have given them.' These are the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites contended with the Lord, and there he showed himself holy among them.

Then the people of Israel, the whole gathering, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month. And the people stayed at Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there. And there was no water for the gathering. And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people argued with Moses and spoke: If only we'd died when our brothers died in front of the Lord. And why have you brought the gathering of the Lord into this wilderness, so we and our cattle die here? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us into this bad place? It's not a place of seed or of figs or of vines or of pomegranates. And there's no water to drink. And Moses and Aaron went from in front of the gathering to the door of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord showed itself to them. And the Lord spoke to Moses: Take the staff and gather the gathering together, you and Aaron your brother. And speak to the rock in front of their eyes, and it'll give its water. And you'll bring water out of the rock for them, and give the gathering and their cattle a drink. And Moses took the staff from in front of the Lord, the way he ordered him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the gathering together in front of the rock. And he said to them: Listen now, you rebels — do we have to bring you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff. And the water came out plenty, and the gathering drank, and their cattle. And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: Because you didn't believe me, to treat me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, you won't bring this gathering into the land I've given them. This is the water of Meribah, because the people of Israel argued with the Lord, and he was made holy in them.

Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there. And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there? And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink. And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

Edom says no

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: 'This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardship that has come on us.' How our fathers headed down into Egypt, and we've lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt badly with us and with our fathers. When we called out to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And look — we are in Kadesh, a town on the edge of your border. 'Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through the fields or vineyards, and we will not drink water from the wells. We will travel by the king's highway and will not turn aside to the right or left until we have passed through your territory.' Edom said, 'You will not pass through my land. If you do, I will come out against you with the sword.' The Israelites said to him: We will go by the highway. If I and my cattle drink your water, then I will pay for it. Only let me go through on foot, that is all. He said: You will not go through. And Edom came out against him with a great many people and with a strong hand. So Edom refused to allow Israel through his territory, and Israel turned away from him.

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: This is what your brother Israel says. You know all the trouble that's come on us — how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we've lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt badly with us and with our fathers. And when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And look — we're in Kadesh, a town on the edge of your border. Let us go through your country, please. We won't go through the fields or through the vineyards, and we won't drink the water of the wells. We'll go along the king's highway. We won't turn to the right or the left till we've gone past your borders. And Edom said to him: You won't go through my land, or I'll come out against you with the sword. And the people of Israel said to him: We'll go by the highway. And if I and my cattle drink your water, then I'll pay for it. Only let me go through on foot, that's all. And he said: You won't go through. And Edom came out against him with plenty of people and with a strong hand. So Edom refused to let Israel go through his border. So Israel turned away from him.

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us: How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers: And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border: Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders. And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword. And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet. And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. The Israelites moved on from Kadesh, and the whole community came to Mount Hor. At Mount Hor, by the border of Edom, the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 'Aaron will be gathered to his people.
