The work of the Kohathites

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: Take the count of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' houses, From thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who comes to do the work in the tent of meeting. This will be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, about the most holy things. When the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons will come and take down the covering curtain and cover the ark of the covenant with it. They will put on it a covering of fine leather and spread over that a cloth all of blue, and put in its poles. And on the table of the bread of the Presence they will spread a cloth of blue, and put on it the dishes and the spoons and the bowls and the covers to pour with. And the bread that is always there will be on it. They will spread a scarlet cloth on them and cover it with a covering of fine leather, and put in its poles. They will take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand of the light, and its lamps and its tongs and its trays and all its oil vessels they serve it with. They will put it and all its vessels in a covering of fine leather, and put it on a carrying frame. And on the golden altar they will spread a blue cloth and cover it with a covering of fine leather, and put in its poles. They will take all the vessels for serving that they serve with in the sanctuary, and put them in a blue cloth and cover them with a covering of fine leather, and put them on a carrying frame. They will take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth on it. They will put on it all its vessels they serve about it with — the firepans, the forks and the shovels and the basins, all the vessels of the altar. They will spread a covering of fine leather on it and put in its poles. When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the vessels of the sanctuary, when the camp is to move on, then the sons of Kohath will come to carry it. But they will not touch any holy thing, or they will die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. Eleazar son of Aaron the priest will have charge of the oil for the light and the sweet incense and the daily grain offering and the anointing oil, and the oversight of the whole tent and everything in it, in the sanctuary and in its vessels. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: Don't cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites. But do this for them, so they live and don't die when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons will go in and set them each to his work and to his load. But they will not go in to look at the holy things when they are covered, or they will die.
