The towns of refuge
When the Lord your God has cut off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you drive them out and live in their cities and in their houses — Set apart three cities for yourself within the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess. Prepare the road and divide the borders of the land the Lord your God gives you to inherit into three parts, so every manslayer may flee there. This is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbour unintentionally, whom he did not hate in time past — for example, when a man goes into the wood with his neighbour to cut timber, swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbour so that he dies — he may flee to one of these cities and live. Otherwise the avenger of blood may pursue the manslayer while his heart is hot, overtake him because the way is long, and kill him, though he was not worthy of death because he had not hated him in time past. So I'm commanding you: You'll set apart three cities for yourself. And the judges will ask about it carefully. And if the witness is a false witness who's testified falsely against his brother, then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. So you'll put the evil away from among you. Those who remain will hear and fear, and will commit no more such evil among you. And your eye won't spare — life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
