A heart to know
These are the words of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, besides the covenant he made with them in Horeb. Moses called all Israel together and said, "You have seen everything the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, all his servants and all his land — The great temptations your eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders. Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see or ears to hear, to this day. I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your shoe has not worn out on your foot. You haven't eaten bread or drunk wine or strong drink — so you'd know that I'm the Lord your God. When you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we struck them down. We took their land and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to the half tribe of Manasseh. So keep the words of this covenant and do them, so you do well in everything you do. All of you stand this day before the Lord your God — your captains, tribes, elders, officers, and all the men of Israel, Your little ones, your wives and the stranger in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water — so you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God and into his oath, which the Lord your God makes with you this day, so he may establish you today as a people for himself and be your God, as he told you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I do not make this covenant and oath with you alone, but with those who stand here with us today before the Lord our God, and also with those who are not here with us today.

I do not make this covenant and oath with you alone,

The root that gives poison
Because you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the nations you went past. You've seen their rotten things and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, among them. Make sure there is not among you a man, woman, family or tribe whose heart turns away this day from the Lord our God to serve the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces poison and bitterness. When he hears the words of this curse, he blesses himself in his heart and says, 'I will have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart,' adding drunkenness to thirst. The Lord will not spare him. The anger of the Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man, every curse written in this book will lie on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. The Lord will separate him for evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law. The generation of your children who come after you, and the stranger who comes from a far land, will speak when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has laid on it — the whole land is burning sulphur, salt and burning, not sown and bearing nothing, with no grass growing in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger and fury — and all nations will say: Why has the Lord done this to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean? Then people will say: Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went and served other gods and worshipped them, gods they did not know and that he had not given to them. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this book. The Lord ripped them out of their land in anger, fury and burning rage, and threw them into another land, where they are today. The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so we may do all the words of this law.

And the Lord will pick him out for trouble out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of teaching. So the next generation of your children who come after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, will say when they see the blows on that land and the sicknesses the Lord has laid on it — the whole land burning with sulphur and salt, not sown and giving nothing, with no grass growing in it, like the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overturned in his anger and his fury — even all the nations will say: Why has the Lord done this to this land? What's the heat of this great anger? Then people will say: Because they walked out on the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, that he cut with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. Because they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods they didn't know and that he hadn't given them. So the anger of the Lord was hot against this land, to bring on it every curse written in this book. And the Lord pulled them up out of their land in anger and in fury and in great heat, and threw them into another land, the way it is today. And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law: So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD hath laid upon it; And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath: Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them: And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book: And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
