Listen, heavens, while I speak; earth, hear what I have to say. My teaching will drop as the rain, my speech will distil as the dew, as the small rain on the tender herb and as showers on the grass. Because I will publish the name of the Lord. Give greatness to our God. He is the Rock. His work is perfect, for all his ways are judgment. A God of truth and without wrongdoing, just and right is he. They have corrupted themselves. Their spot is not the spot of his children. They are a perverse and crooked generation. Is this how you repay the Lord, you foolish and unwise people? Is he not your father who bought you? Has he not made you and established you? Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you. When the Most High divided the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the Israelites. For the Lord's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. He found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. He led him about, instructed him and kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads out her wings, takes them and carries them on her wings, so the Lord alone led him, and there was no strange god with him. He made him ride on the high places of the earth, so he might eat the increase of the fields. He made him suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock, butter of cattle and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, rams of the breed of Bashan and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and you drank the pure blood of the grape. But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. You grew fat, thick and covered with fatness. Then he forsook God who made him and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. They provoked him to jealousy with foreign gods; with disgusting things they provoked him to anger. They sacrificed to devils, not to God — to gods they did not know, new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers did not fear. You forgot the Rock who gave you life, and forgot the God who formed you. When the Lord saw it, he loathed them because of the provoking of his sons and daughters. He said, 'I'll hide my face from them. I'll see what their end will be, because they're a twisted generation, children with no faith in them. They have moved me to jealousy with what is not God and provoked me to anger with their worthless idols. I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people and provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. For a fire is kindled in my anger and will burn to the lowest hell. It'll consume the earth with her increase and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them. They'll be burnt with hunger, devoured with burning heat and bitter destruction. I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword outside and terror within will destroy both the young man and the young woman, the baby and the grey-haired man. I said I would scatter them into corners and make the memory of them cease from among men, if I hadn't feared what the enemy might say — that their enemies would get the wrong idea and say, 'We did this ourselves; the Lord had nothing to do with it.' For they are a nation void of counsel, and there is no understanding in them. Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! How could one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them and the Lord had shut them up? For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. Their vine is from the vine of Sodom and the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous; their clusters are bitter. Their wine is serpent poison, the cruel venom of cobras. Is not this laid up in store with me and sealed up among my treasures? Vengeance and payback belong to me. Their foot will slip when the time comes, because their day of disaster is near and what's coming is rushing towards them. For the Lord will judge his people and repent himself for his servants when he sees that their power is gone and there is none shut up or left. He'll say, 'Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, which ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you. Let them be your protection. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me. I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; neither is there any who can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my hand to heaven and say, I live forever. If I whet my glittering sword and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to my enemies and reward those who hate me. I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh — with the blood of those killed and the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Rejoice, O nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants, render vengeance to his adversaries, and be merciful to his land and to his people.'

And you drank the pure blood of the grape. But Jeshurun got fat and kicked. You got fat, you got thick, you were covered in it. Then he left the God who made him and made nothing of the Rock of his salvation. They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods. They made him angry with disgusting things. They sacrificed to demons, not to God — gods they didn't know, new ones that came up lately, that your fathers didn't fear. You've forgotten the Rock that fathered you. You've stopped remembering the God who gave you birth. And the Lord saw it and loathed them, because his sons and his daughters made him angry. And he said: I'll hide my face from them. I'll see what their end will be. Because they're a twisted generation, children with no faith in them. They've stirred me to jealousy with what isn't God. They've made me angry with their empty things. And I'll stir them to jealousy with what isn't a people. I'll make them angry with a stupid nation. Because a fire is lit in my anger, and it'll burn to the lowest grave. And it'll eat the earth with its harvest and set the foundations of the mountains alight. I'll heap troubles on them. I'll use up my arrows on them. They'll be wasted with hunger and eaten up with burning heat and bitter ruin. Because I lift my hand to heaven and say: As surely as I live forever — if I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand takes hold of judgment, I'll pay back the ones against me and pay the ones who hate me. I'll make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will eat flesh — with the blood of the killed and the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy. Sing out, you nations, with his people.
