Not for your righteousness

Listen, Israel: today you are crossing the Jordan to drive out nations bigger and stronger than you, with huge cities fortified right up to the sky. a people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom you know and have heard about: 'Who can stand before the children of Anak?' Understand today that the Lord your God is the one who goes over before you. As a consuming fire he will destroy them and bring them down before you. You'll drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you. After the Lord your God has cast them out before you, do not say in your heart, 'The Lord brought me in to possess this land because of my righteousness.' No — it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord drives them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land. It is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out, and so he may perform the word he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So understand this: the Lord your God is not giving you this good land because of your righteousness. You're a stubborn mob.

Listen, Israel. You're going over the Jordan today to go in and drive out nations bigger and stronger than you, towns big and fenced up to the sky — a people big and tall, the sons of the Anakim, who you know about and have heard said of them: Who can stand in front of the sons of Anak? So know today that the Lord your God is the one who goes over in front of you, a fire that eats things up. He'll wreck them and bring them down in front of you. So you'll drive them out and wreck them quickly, the way the Lord has said to you. Don't say in your heart, after the Lord your God has thrown them out in front of you: The Lord has brought me in to own this land because of my righteousness. No — it's for the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out in front of you. It's not for your righteousness or the straightness of your heart that you're going in to own their land. It's for the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out in front of you, and so he'd carry out the word the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. So know that the Lord your God isn't giving you this good land to own for your righteousness — because you're a stiff-necked people.

Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven, A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak! Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee. Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

Remember the golden calf

Remember, and do not forget, how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. At Horeb you provoked the Lord to anger as well, and the Lord was angry enough with you to destroy you. When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant the Lord made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water. The Lord gave me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God. On them were all the words the Lord spoke to you on the mountain out of the middle of the fire on the day of the assembly. At the end of forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. Then the Lord said to me, 'Get up and go down quickly from here, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned aside from the way I commanded them and made themselves a cast-metal idol.' The Lord also said to me, 'I've seen this people, and look — they're a stubborn mob. Leave me alone so I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.' So I turned and came down the mountain while the mountain burned with fire, with the two tablets of the covenant in my hands. I looked, and there you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a molten calf and quickly turned aside from the way the Lord commanded you. I took the two tablets, threw them out of my hands and broke them before your eyes. Then I fell down before the Lord, as I did the first time, forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water because of all your sin, doing wickedly in the LORD's eyes and provoking him to anger. I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the Lord was angry against you to destroy you. But the Lord listened to me that time as well. The Lord was very angry with Aaron and would have destroyed him, so I prayed for Aaron at the same time. I took your sin, the calf you had made, burned it with fire, stamped it and ground it very small, until it was as fine as dust. Then I cast its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.

Remember and don't forget how you made the Lord your God angry in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt till you came to this place, you've been rebels against the Lord. You made the Lord angry at Horeb too, so the Lord was angry enough with you to wreck you. When I went up the mountain to get the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant the Lord cut with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I didn't eat bread or drink water. And the Lord gave me two stone tablets written with the finger of God. And on them was everything the Lord spoke with you on the mountain out of the middle of the fire on the day of the gathering. And at the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. And the Lord said to me: Get up and go down quickly from here, because your people that you brought out of Egypt have gone rotten. They've turned aside quickly from the way I ordered them. They've made themselves a cast image. And the Lord said to me: I've looked at this people, and look — they're a stiff-necked people. Leave me alone, so I can wreck them and wipe out their name from under the sky. And I'll make you into a nation stronger and bigger than them. So I turned and came down off the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. And I looked, and there you'd sinned against the Lord your God. You'd made yourselves a cast calf. You'd turned aside quickly from the way the Lord ordered you. So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them in front of your eyes. And I fell down in front of the Lord like the first time, forty days and forty nights. I didn't eat bread or drink water, because of all the sins you'd sinned by doing what was wrong in the eyes of the Lord, to make him angry. Because I was frightened of the anger and the fury the Lord was angry with you over, enough to wreck you. But the Lord listened to me that time too. And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to wreck him. And I prayed for Aaron at the same time. And I took your sin, the calf you'd made, and burnt it with fire and pounded it and ground it right down till it was as fine as dust. And I threw its dust into the stream that came down off the mountain.

Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD. Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you. When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the LORD your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you. And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes. And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also. And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time. And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.

I fell down in front of the Lord

At Taberah, Massah and Kibrothhattaavah, you provoked the Lord to anger again. And when the Lord sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, 'Go up and possess the land I have given you,' you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God. You did not believe him or listen to his voice. You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day I knew you. So I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, because the Lord had said he would destroy you. I prayed to the Lord: 'O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your inheritance, whom you redeemed through your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Do not look at the stubbornness of this people, or at their wickedness and sin, otherwise the land you brought us out of may say, "Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land he promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to kill them in the wilderness." Yet they are your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out by your mighty power and outstretched arm.'

And at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah you made the Lord angry. And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea and said, Go up and own the land I've given you — then you rebelled against the order of the Lord your God and didn't believe him or listen to his voice. You've been rebels against the Lord from the day I knew you. So I fell down in front of the Lord forty days and forty nights, the way I fell down at first — because the Lord had said he'd wreck you. So I prayed to the Lord and said: Lord God, don't wreck your people and your inheritance that you've bought back with your greatness, that you've brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. Remember your servants Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. Don't look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or at their sin — or the land you brought us out of will say: Because the Lord couldn't bring them into the land he promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to kill them in the wilderness. But they're your people and your inheritance, that you brought out by your great strength and by your outstretched arm.

And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath. Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice. Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you. Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you. I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin: Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
