Don't cut a covenant with them
When the Lord your God brings you into the land you're going in to possess and casts out many nations before you — the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you — and when the Lord your God delivers them into your hand and you strike them down, you'll utterly destroy them. Make no covenant with them and show them no mercy. Do not marry among them. Do not give your daughter to his son or take his daughter for your son. They would turn your children away from following me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you and destroy you quickly. This is what you'll do to them: tear down their altars, break their images, cut down their pagan worship poles and burn their carved images with fire. For you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special people, above all the peoples on the face of the earth. He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt that you know upon you, but will lay them upon all those who hate you. You'll consume all the people the Lord your God delivers to you. Your eye will have no pity on them, and you won't serve their gods, because that would be a snare to you. If you say in your heart, 'These nations are more than I am. How can I dispossess them?' do not be afraid of them. Remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt — the great temptations your eyes saw, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you are afraid of. The Lord your God will also send the hornet among them until those who are left and hide from you are destroyed. Do not be terrified by them, because the Lord your God is among you, a mighty and terrible God. The Lord your God will put out those nations before you little by little. You may not consume them all at once, or the beasts of the field would increase against you. But the Lord your God will deliver them to you and destroy them with a mighty destruction until they are destroyed. He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you'll destroy their name from under heaven. No one will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them. Burn the carved images of their gods with fire. Do not desire the silver or gold on them or take it for yourself, or you may be snared by it, because it is disgusting to the Lord your God. Do not bring a disgusting thing into your house, or you will become a cursed thing like it. Utterly detest it and utterly loathe it, because it is a cursed thing.
