Don't add and don't take away

Now, Israel, listen to the rules and judgments I am teaching you to do, so that you may live, go in and possess the land the Lord God of your fathers is giving you. Do not add to the word I command you, and do not take anything away from it. Keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I give you. Your eyes have seen what the Lord did over Baalpeor. Because the Lord your God has destroyed every man who followed Baalpeor from among you. But you who stuck to the Lord your God are all alive today, every one of you. Look — I've taught you rules and judgments as the Lord my God commanded me, so you'd do them in the land you're going into to possess. Keep them and do them, because this will show the nations your wisdom and understanding. When they hear all these rules, they will say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." For what nation is so great that has God so near to them as the Lord our God is whenever we call on him? And what great nation has rules and judgments as fair as this whole law I'm setting before you today? Only watch yourself carefully. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and do not let them slip from your heart all the days of your life. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren. The day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord said to me: Gather the people together and I'll make them hear my words, so they learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and teach their children. You came near and stood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire right into the middle of the sky, with darkness and cloud and thick darkness. The Lord spoke to you out of the middle of the fire. You heard the sound of the words but saw no shape — only a voice. He told you his covenant, which he commanded you to do — ten words — and he wrote them on two stone tablets. The Lord commanded me at that time to teach you rules and judgments, so you'd do them in the land you're crossing over to possess.

Now listen, Israel, to the rules and the judgments I'm teaching you, so you do them and live and go in and own the land the Lord God of your fathers is giving you. Don't add to the word I'm ordering you and don't take away from it, so you keep the orders of the Lord your God that I'm ordering you. Your eyes have seen what the Lord did over Baal Peor. Because the Lord your God has wrecked every man who followed Baal Peor from among you. But you who stuck to the Lord your God are all alive today, every one of you. Look — I've taught you rules and judgments the way the Lord my God ordered me, so you'd do them in the land you're going into to own. So keep them and do them, because that's your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the peoples, who'll hear all these rules and say: This great nation is a wise and understanding people, no question. Because what great nation has got a god as close to them as the Lord our God is, whenever we call on him? And what great nation has got rules and judgments as fair as this whole teaching I'm setting in front of you today? Only watch yourself and keep your soul carefully, so you don't forget the things your eyes have seen, and so they don't go out of your heart all the days of your life. But teach them to your sons and your sons' sons — the day you stood in front of the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord said to me: Gather the people together and I'll make them hear my words, so they learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and teach their children. And you came near and stood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire right into the middle of the sky, with darkness and cloud and thick darkness. And the Lord spoke to you out of the middle of the fire. You heard the sound of the words but saw no shape — only a voice. And he told you his covenant, which he ordered you to do — ten words — and he wrote them on two stone tablets. And the Lord ordered me at that time to teach you rules and judgments, so you'd do them in the land you're going over to own.

Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you. But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day. Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons; Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children. And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

King James Version, 1611

You saw no shape

So watch yourselves very carefully. You saw no form on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. So you don't corrupt yourselves and make yourselves a carved image, the shape of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any animal on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, The likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish in the waters under the earth. And so you don't lift your eyes to the sky and see the sun and the moon and the stars, the whole host of heaven, and be pulled away to bow down to them and serve them — things the Lord your God has divided to all the peoples under all heaven. But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his own inheritance, as you are this day. The Lord was angry with me because of you and swore I wouldn't cross the Jordan, and that I wouldn't go into that good land the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. But I have to die in this land. I won't cross the Jordan. But you'll go in and possess that good land. Watch yourselves, so you do not forget the covenant the Lord your God made with you and make yourselves a carved image in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. When you father children and children's children and you've been in the land a long time, and you corrupt themselves and make a carved image, the likeness of anything, and do what's wrong in the eyes of the Lord your God to make him angry — I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you'll be soon perish from off the land you're crossing the Jordan to possess. You won't have long days on it. You'll be completely destroyed. The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you'll be left few in number among the nations the Lord leads you to. And there you'll serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, that don't see or hear or eat or smell. But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him, if you seek him with all your heart and all your soul. When you are in trouble and all these things have come on you, even in the latter days, if you turn to the Lord your God and obey his voice, the Lord your God is merciful. He will not abandon you, destroy you, or forget the covenant he swore to your fathers.

So watch yourselves carefully — because you saw no kind of shape on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the middle of the fire — so you don't go rotten and make yourselves a carved image, the shape of any figure, the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish in the waters under the earth. And so you don't lift your eyes to the sky and see the sun and the moon and the stars, the whole host of the sky, and be pulled away to bow down to them and serve them — things the Lord your God has handed out to all the peoples under the whole sky. But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his own inheritance, the way you are today. And the Lord was angry with me because of you and swore I wouldn't go over the Jordan, and that I wouldn't go into that good land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. But I have to die in this land. I won't go over the Jordan. But you'll go over and own that good land. Watch yourselves, so you don't forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he cut with you, and make yourselves a carved image, the likeness of anything the Lord your God has said no to. Because the Lord your God is a fire that eats things up, a jealous God. When you father children and children's children and you've been in the land a long time, and you go rotten and make a carved image, the likeness of anything, and do what's wrong in the eyes of the Lord your God to make him angry — I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you'll be finished right off the land you're going over the Jordan to own. You won't have long days on it. You'll be completely wrecked. And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you'll be left few in number among the nations the Lord leads you to. And there you'll serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, that don't see or hear or eat or smell. But if you look for the Lord your God from there, you'll find him — if you look for him with your whole heart and your whole soul. When you're in trouble and all these things have come on you, in the days to come, if you turn back to the Lord your God and listen to his voice — because the Lord your God is a God of mercy — he won't leave you or wreck you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day. Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance: But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land. Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger: I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed. And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you. And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

There's nobody else

Ask now about the days before you, since the day God created man on the earth, and from one end of the sky to the other, whether there's been anything like this great thing, or anything heard like it. Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the middle of the fire, as you heard it, and live? Or has God ever tried to go and take a nation for himself out of the middle of another nation, by testings, by signs and by wonders, by war and by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and by great terrors, as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? You were shown these things so you would know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. He made you hear his voice out of the sky to set you straight. And on earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words out of the middle of the fire. And because he loved your fathers, he chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt in his eyes with his great strength — To drive out nations before you bigger and stronger than you, to bring you in and give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day. So know this day, and take it to heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no other. Keep his rules and commandments, which I command you today, so things may go well with you and your children after you, and so you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you forever.

Ask now about the days before you, since the day God created man on the earth, and from one end of the sky to the other, whether there's been anything like this great thing, or anything heard like it. Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the middle of the fire, the way you heard it, and live? Or has God ever tried to go and take a nation for himself out of the middle of another nation, by testings, by signs and by wonders, by war and by a strong hand and an outstretched arm and by great terrors, the way the Lord your God did for you in Egypt in front of your eyes? So know today and take it into your heart that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There's nobody else. So keep his rules and his orders that I'm ordering you today, so it goes well for you and for your children after you, and so you make your days long on the land the Lord your God is giving you for all time.

For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him. Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire. And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt; To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day. Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

The cities of refuge

Then Moses set apart three cities on this side of the Jordan towards the sunrise, So the killer could run there who'd killed his neighbour without meaning to and hadn't hated him before. And he'd run to one of these cities and live. Bezer in the wilderness, in the flat country, for the Reubenites. And Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites. And Golan in Bashan for the Manassites. This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. These are the instructions and the rules and judgments Moses spoke to the Israelites after they came out of Egypt, On this side of the Jordan in the valley opposite Bethpeor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, who Moses and the Israelites struck down after they came out of Egypt. They took his land to possess, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites on this side of the Jordan towards the sunrise — From Aroer on the edge of the river Arnon right to Mount Zion, which is Hermon, All the Arabah on this side of the Jordan towards the east, right to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising; That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live: Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.
