Then we turned and set out into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me. And we went round Mount Seir for many days. Then the Lord said to me: "You have gone around this mountain long enough. Turn north. Tell the people: You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully. Do not meddle with them, because I will not give you any of their land — not so much as a footstep. I have given mount Seir to Esau for a possession. You'll buy food off them with money so you can eat, and you'll buy water off them with money so you can drink. The Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He knows your journey through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing. When we went past our brothers, the sons of Esau who live in Seir, by the way of the Arabah from Elath and Eziongaber, we turned and went by the way of the wilderness of Moab. The Lord said to me: Don't trouble Moab or fight them, because I won't give you any of their land to possess. Because I've given Ar to the sons of Lot to possess. The Emim used to live there, a people great, many and tall as the Anakim. They were counted as giants too, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim. The Horites used to live in Seir too, but the sons of Esau succeeded them and destroyed them and lived in their place — as Israel did to the land they possess, the one the Lord gave them. And the time from when we came from Kadeshbarnea till we came over the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the whole generation of the men of war was consumed from among the host, as the Lord swore to them. And the hand of the Lord was against them too, to destroy them from among the host until they were consumed. So when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, The Lord spoke to me: You're going past the border of Moab today, past Ar. When you come near the Ammonites, don't trouble them or fight them, because I won't give you any of the land of the Ammonites to possess. Because I've given it to the sons of Lot to possess. That was counted as a land of giants too. Giants used to live there, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim — A people great, many and tall as the Anakim. But the Lord destroyed them before them, and they succeeded them and lived in their place. As he did for the sons of Esau who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them, and they succeeded them and lived in their place to this day. And the Avvim who lived in the villages as far as Gaza — the Caphtorim who came out of Caphtor destroyed them and lived in their place.
