Ish-Bosheth killed
When Ish-Bosheth heard that Abner had died at Hebron, his courage failed and all Israel was shaken. Ish-Bosheth had two captains of raiding bands, Baanah and Rechab, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite from Benjamin. Beeroth was counted as part of Benjamin, because the Beerothites had fled to Gittaim and still live there as foreigners to this day. Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was crippled in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but in her hurry she dropped him, and he became disabled. His name was Mephibosheth. Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, set out and arrived at Ish-Bosheth's house around midday, while he was having his afternoon rest. They slipped into the middle of the house as though coming to collect wheat, then stabbed him in the stomach. Rechab and his brother Baanah escaped. They had entered the house while Ish-Bosheth was lying on his bed in his bedroom. They struck and killed him, cut off his head, took it with them and travelled all night through the Arabah. They brought Ish-Bosheth's head to David at Hebron and said, Here is the head of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who tried to kill you. Today the Lord has given my lord the king revenge on Saul and his descendants. David answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite: As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every trouble, when someone told me, Saul is dead, thinking he was bringing good news, I seized him and had him killed at Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news. How much more when wicked men have murdered an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed? Shouldn't I now demand his blood from you and remove you from the earth? David ordered his young men to kill them. They cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies beside the pool at Hebron. Because when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedroom. And they struck him and killed him and cut off his head, and took his head and got away through the plain all night. And they brought the head of Ish-Bosheth to David at Hebron and said to the king: Look — the head of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, the one against you, who looked for your life. And the Lord has paid my lord the king back today on Saul and on his offspring. And David answered Rekab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them: As surely as the Lord lives, who's bought back my soul out of all trouble — when someone told me: Look, Saul is dead — thinking he brought good news, I took hold of him and killed him in Ziklag, when he thought I'd give him a reward for his news. How much more when wicked men have killed a righteous person in his own house on his bed. So shouldn't I want his blood back now from your hand and take you away from the earth? For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed. And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.
