Amnon and Tamar
Some time later, David's son Absalom had a beautiful sister named Tamar, and David's son Amnon became obsessed with her. Amnon became so distressed over his sister Tamar that he made himself sick. She was a virgin, and he thought there was no proper way for him to approach her. Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, son of David's brother Shimeah. Jonadab was a very shrewd man. Jonadab asked him, You're the king's son. Why do you look more miserable every morning? Aren't you going to tell me? Amnon said, I'm in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister. Jonadab told him, Lie down on your bed and pretend you're sick. When your father comes to see you, say, Please let my sister Tamar come and prepare some food where I can watch her, then serve it to me herself. So Amnon lay down and pretended to be sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes here in front of me, so I can eat them from her hand. David sent word to Tamar at the palace: Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare some food for him. Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house while he was lying down. She took flour, kneaded it, shaped the cakes in front of him and cooked them. She took the pan and served them to him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, Everyone out. So everyone left him. Then Amnon told Tamar, Bring the food into my bedroom so I can eat it from your hand. Tamar took the cakes she had made and carried them into the bedroom to her brother Amnon. When she brought them to him, he grabbed her and said, Come to bed with me, my sister. She said, No, my brother. Don't force me. Nothing like this should be done in Israel. Don't do this disgraceful thing. Where could I ever get rid of my shame? And you would be regarded as one of Israel's fools. Please speak to the king instead; he won't refuse to give me to you. But Amnon would not listen. He was stronger than she was, and he forced himself on her and raped her. Then Amnon's feeling toward her turned into intense hatred. The hatred he felt was greater than the desire he had felt before. He said to her, Get up. Get out. Tamar said, No. Sending me away now would be an even greater wrong than what you've already done to me. But he would not listen. He called the servant who attended him and said, Get this woman out of here, and bolt the door behind her. Tamar was wearing an ornate robe, the kind the king's virgin daughters wore. The servant put her outside and bolted the door behind her. Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hand on her head and went away crying aloud. Her brother Absalom asked her, Has your brother Amnon been with you? For now, my sister, keep quiet. He is your brother. Don't let this destroy you. Tamar lived desolate in her brother Absalom's house. When King David heard everything that had happened, he was furious. Absalom said nothing to Amnon, either good or bad. He hated Amnon because he had raped his sister Tamar.
And after this Absalom son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar. And Amnon son of David loved her. And Amnon was so troubled that he fell sick over his sister Tamar. Because she was a virgin, and Amnon thought it hard to do anything to her. But Amnon had a mate whose name was Jonadab, son of Shimeah, David's brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. And he said to him: Why are you, the king's son, so worn down from day to day? Won't you tell me? And Amnon said to him: I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister. And Jonadab said to him: Lie down on your bed and make out you're sick. And when your father comes to see you, say to him: Let my sister Tamar come, please, and give me food, and get the food ready in my sight, so I can see it and eat it from her hand. So Amnon lay down and made out he was sick. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king: Let my sister Tamar come, please, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, so I can eat from her hand. Then David sent home to Tamar: Go to your brother Amnon's house now and get food ready for him. So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house, and he was lying down. And she took flour and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. And she took a pan and poured them out in front of him. But he refused to eat. And Amnon said: Send everyone out from me. And they all went out from him. And Amnon said to Tamar: Bring the food into the room, so I can eat from your hand. And Tamar took the cakes she'd made and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother. And when she'd brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her: Come, lie with me, my sister. And she answered him: No, my brother, don't force me. Because nothing like this should be done in Israel. Don't do this stupid thing. And I — where would I get rid of my shame? And as for you, you'd be like one of the fools in Israel. So please speak to the king now. Because he won't hold me back from you. But he wouldn't listen to her voice. But being stronger than her, he forced her and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her badly, so the hatred he hated her with was greater than the love he'd loved her with. And Amnon said to her: Get up, go. And she said to him: There's no reason. This wrong of sending me away is greater than the other you did to me. But he wouldn't listen to her. Then he called his servant who served him: Put this woman out from me now, and bolt the door after her. And she had a robe of many colours on her. Because that's how the king's daughters who were virgins were dressed. Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her. And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the robe of many colours she had on, and laid her hand on her head and went off crying out. And Absalom her brother said to her: Has Amnon your brother been with you? But hold your peace now, my sister. He's your brother. Don't set your heart on this thing. So Tamar stayed desolate in her brother Absalom's house. But when King David heard all these things, he was very angry. And Absalom didn't speak to his brother Amnon, either good or bad. Because Absalom hated Amnon, because he'd forced his sister Tamar.
And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man. And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister. And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand. So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat. So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes. And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him. And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister. And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly. Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone. And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her. And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying. And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house. But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

Absalom's revenge
Two full years later, Absalom's sheep were being shorn at Baal Hazor near Ephraim, and he invited all the king's sons. Absalom went to the king and said, Your servant's sheep are being shorn. Please let the king and his officials come with me. The king answered, No, my son. We shouldn't all come and put you to that much trouble. Absalom kept urging him, but David would not go. He did, however, give him his blessing. Then Absalom said, If you won't come, please let my brother Amnon come with us. The king asked, Why does he need to go with you? But Absalom kept pressing him until the king allowed Amnon and all the other royal sons to go. Absalom ordered his servants, Watch Amnon. When the wine has put him in a good mood and I tell you, Strike Amnon, kill him. Don't be afraid. I'm the one giving the order. Be strong and do it. Absalom's servants did exactly as he ordered. Then all the king's other sons jumped up, mounted their mules and fled. While they were still on the road, a report reached David: Absalom has killed all the king's sons. Not one of them is left. The king stood up, tore his clothes and lay on the ground. All his servants stood around him with their clothes torn as well. But Jonadab son of David's brother Shimeah said, My lord mustn't think they've killed all the king's sons. Only Amnon is dead. Absalom has intended this ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar. So don't let my lord the king take this report to heart as though all your sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead. Meanwhile Absalom fled. The watchman looked up and saw a large crowd coming down the road along the hillside behind him. Jonadab said to the king, There you are — the king's sons are coming, just as your servant said. As he finished speaking, the king's sons arrived, weeping loudly. The king and all his servants also wept bitterly. Absalom fled to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. David mourned for his son day after day. Absalom stayed in Geshur for three years. Eventually King David's grief over Amnon eased, and he longed to go to Absalom.
And after two full years, Absalom had shearers in Baal Hazor, which is beside Ephraim. And Absalom asked all the king's sons. And Absalom came to the king: Look now — your servant has shearers. Let the king and his servants go with your servant, please. And the king said to Absalom: No, my son, let's not all go now, so we aren't a load on you. And he pushed him, but he wouldn't go, but blessed him. Then Absalom said: If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him: Why should he go with you? But Absalom pushed him, so he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. Now Absalom had ordered his servants: Watch now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you: Strike Amnon — then kill him. Don't be frightened. Haven't I ordered you? Be brave and act like men. And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king's sons got up, and every man got on his mule and ran. And while they were on the way, the news came to David: Absalom has killed all the king's sons, and there isn't one of them left. Then the king got up and tore his clothes and lay on the earth. And all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. And Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, answered: Don't let my lord think they've killed all the young men the king's sons. Because Amnon only is dead. Because this has been settled by the word of Absalom since the day he forced his sister Tamar. So now don't let my lord the king take the thing to his heart, thinking all the king's sons are dead. Because Amnon only is dead. But Absalom ran off. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked. And there were plenty of people coming by the way of the hillside behind him. And Jonadab said to the king: Look — the king's sons are coming. It's the way your servant said. And as soon as he'd finished speaking, the king's sons came and lifted up their voice and wept. And the king and all his servants wept very hard too. But Absalom ran off and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. So Absalom ran off and went to Geshur, and was there three years. And the soul of King David longed to go out to Absalom. Because he was comforted about Amnon, seeing he was dead.
And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant. And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant. And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled. And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left. Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar. Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead. But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him. And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king’s sons come: as thy servant said, so it is. And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore. But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years. And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

So don't let my lord the king take this report to heart as though all your sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.
