Kindness for Jonathan's sake
David asked, Is there anyone still left from Saul's family? I'd like to show them kindness for Jonathan's sake. There was a servant from Saul's household named Ziba. They summoned him to David, and the king asked, Are you Ziba? He replied, At your service. The king asked, Is there no one left from Saul's family to whom I can show God's kindness? Ziba answered, Jonathan still has a son. He's disabled in both feet. Where is he? the king asked. Ziba answered, He's at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar. So King David sent for him and had him brought from Makir son of Ammiel's house at Lo Debar. When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David, he fell face down and bowed. David said, Mephibosheth. He answered, I'm your servant. Don't be afraid, David told him. I'll certainly show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I'll restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you'll always eat at my table. Mephibosheth bowed and said, What is your servant, that you'd bother looking twice at a dead dog like me? Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and said, I've given your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. You, your sons and your servants are to work the land for him and bring in its produce so your master's grandson has what he needs. But Mephibosheth himself will always eat at my table. Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. Ziba said to the king, Your servant will do everything my lord the king has commanded. So Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's own sons. Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. Everyone living in Ziba's household became Mephibosheth's servants. And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king's table. He was disabled in both feet.
And David said: Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, so I can show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba. And when they'd called him to David, the king said to him: Are you Ziba? And he said: I'm your servant. And the king said: Isn't there still anyone of the house of Saul, so I can show the kindness of God to him? And Ziba said to the king: Jonathan has a son who's still there, who's lame in his feet. And the king said to him: Where is he? And Ziba said to the king: Look — he's in the house of Makir son of Ammiel, in Lo Debar. Then King David sent and fetched him out of the house of Makir son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar. Now when Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul had come to David, he fell on his face and bowed down. And David said: Mephibosheth. And he answered: Look — your servant. And David said to him: Don't be frightened. Because I'll definitely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will give you back all the land of Saul your father. And you'll eat bread at my table always. And he bowed himself and said: What's your servant, that you should look at such a dead dog as me? Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him: I've given your master's son everything that belonged to Saul and to all his house. So you'll work the land for him, you and your sons and your servants, and you'll bring in what it grows, so your master's son can have food to eat. And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am? Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master’s son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house. Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons. And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth. So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king’s table; and was lame on both his feet.
