The mighty men

He was with David when they defied the Philistines gathered for battle while the Israelites withdrew. Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines until his hand grew tired and froze around his sword. The Lord brought a great victory that day. Afterwards the troops returned only to strip the dead. Next was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines gathered at a field full of lentils, and Israel's troops fled from them. But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it and struck down the Philistines. The Lord brought a great victory. During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors went down to David at the cave of Adullam while a Philistine force was camped in the Valley of Rephaim. David was in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine garrison was stationed at Bethlehem. David suddenly longed for a drink and said, If only someone would get me water from the well by Bethlehem's gate. So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well by Bethlehem's gate and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it and poured it out before the Lord. He said: Lord, I could never drink this. Wouldn't it be like drinking the blood of men who risked their lives to bring it? So he refused to drink it. These were the sorts of things the three mighty men did. Abishai, Joab's brother and son of Zeruiah, was chief of another three. He raised his spear against three hundred men and killed them, earning a name among the Three. He was the most honoured of that group and became their commander, though he did not rank with the first Three. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant man from Kabzeel who performed great exploits. He killed two of Moab's finest warriors. He also climbed down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. He also killed an imposing Egyptian. The Egyptian had a spear, while Benaiah went against him with only a staff. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own weapon. These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and they earned him a name among the three mighty men. He was more honoured than any of the Thirty, though he did not rank with the first Three. David put him in charge of his personal guard.
