Break up your fallow ground

Israel is an empty vine; he brings forth fruit for himself. The more fruit he had, the more altars he built; the better his land did, the finer his sacred pillars became. Their heart is divided. Now they must bear their guilt. He will break down their altars and destroy their pillars. Now they will say, We have no king, because we didn't fear the Lord. And what could a king do for us anyway? They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant. So judgement springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field. The people of Samaria will fear because of the calves of Bethaven. Its people will mourn over it, and its priests who rejoiced over it will mourn for its glory, because it has left it. It will also be carried to Assyria as a present to king Jareb. Ephraim will receive shame, and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria, her king is cut off like foam upon the water. The worship shrines of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed. Thorns and thistles will grow up on their altars. And they will say to the mountains, Cover us — and to the hills, Fall on us. Israel, you have sinned since the days of Gibeah. There they stood. The battle in Gibeah against the children of wrongdoing did not overtake them. It is my desire to discipline them. The peoples will be gathered against them when they are bound for their two offences. Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to tread out the grain, but I passed over her fair neck. I will make Ephraim ride; Judah will plough, and Jacob will break his clods. Sow for yourselves in righteousness and reap in mercy. Break up your fallow ground, because it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and rains righteousness on you. You have ploughed wickedness and reaped injustice. You have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you trusted in your own way and in the number of your fighting men, So an uproar will rise among your people, and all your fortresses will be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle, when the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. So will Bethel do to you because of your great wickedness. In a morning the king of Israel will be utterly cut off.

Israel is an empty vine. He brings out fruit for himself. As his fruit grew, he made plenty of altars. As his land did well, they made good pillars. Their heart is divided. Now they'll be found guilty. He'll break down their altars. He'll wreck their pillars. Because now they'll say: We've got no king, because we didn't fear the Lord. So what could a king do for us? They've spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant. So judgment comes up like poison weed in the furrows of the field. The people of Samaria will be frightened for the calves of Beth Aven. Because its people will mourn over it, and its priests who celebrated over it, for its glory, because it's gone from it. It'll be carried to Assyria too, as a gift to the great king. Ephraim will get shame, and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria, her king is cut off like a twig on the water. The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be wrecked. Thorns and thistles will come up on their altars. And they'll say to the mountains, Cover us, and to the hills, Fall on us. Israel, you've sinned since the days of Gibeah. There they stood. The battle in Gibeah against the sons of wrongdoing didn't catch them. It's my wish to set them straight, and the peoples will be gathered against them when they're tied up for their two sins. And Ephraim is a trained heifer that likes to thresh. But I went over her lovely neck. I'll make Ephraim ride. Judah will plough, and Jacob will break his clods. Sow for yourselves in righteousness. Reap in mercy. Break up your fallow ground. Because it's time to look for the Lord, till he comes and rains righteousness on you. You've ploughed wickedness. You've reaped wrongdoing. You've eaten the fruit of lies — because you trusted in your own way, in the number of your strong men. So an uproar will get up among your people, and all your strongholds will be wasted, the way Shalman wasted Beth Arbel on the day of battle. The mother was dashed in pieces on her children. That's what Bethel will do to you, because of your great wickedness. In a morning the king of Israel will be completely cut off.

Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images. Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images. For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us? They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water. The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us. O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them. It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows. And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods. Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.
