Everything counted loss
Finally, my brothers, be glad in the Lord. Writing the same things to you again is no trouble to me, and it keeps you safe. Watch out for the dogs. Watch out for evil workers. Watch out for the concision. For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. Though I could put confidence in the flesh myself, if anyone could. If anyone else reckons he has grounds to trust in the flesh, I have more. Circumcised on the eighth day. Of the stock of Israel, the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews. As to the law, a Pharisee. As to zeal, a persecutor of the church. As to the righteousness that is in the law, faultless. But whatever was in the profit column for me, I have written off as loss for Christ's sake. More than that, I count everything as loss next to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have lost the lot, and I count it all as dung, so I can gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but the one that comes through the faith of Christ — the righteousness that comes from God by faith. I want to know him, and the power of his resurrection, and to share in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, so that somehow I might attain to the resurrection of the dead.

Pressing towards the mark
Not that I have already got there, or been made perfect. But I press on, to take hold of what Christ Jesus took hold of me for. Brothers, I don't reckon I have got hold of it yet. But this one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching out for what is ahead, I press on toward the mark, for the prize of God's high calling in Christ Jesus. So all of us who are mature should think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will make that clear to you too. Still, as far as we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule and mind the same thing. Brothers, follow my lead together, and take note of those who live by the pattern you have in us. Because there are plenty walking around — I have told you about them often, and now I tell you again in tears — who are enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their god is their belly. Their glory is in what should shame them. Their minds are set on earthly things. But we belong to heaven, and we are waiting for a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body, by the power that lets him bring everything under his control.
