Confession and remembering
Now on the twenty-fourth day of that month the Israelites gathered, fasting, in coarse mourning cloth and with earth on their heads. And those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins and the wrongs of their fathers. And they stood up in their places and read from the book of the law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and for another quarter they confessed and worshipped the Lord their God. Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Chenani stood up on the Levites' steps and cried out with a loud voice to the Lord their God. Then the Levites — Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah — said: Stand up and bless the Lord your God forever and ever. And blessed be your glorious name, which is lifted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and everything in them. And you keep them all alive, and the host of heaven worships you. You are the Lord God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees and gave him the name Abraham. And you found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites to his descendants. And you have kept your word, because you are righteous. And you saw the suffering of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry at the Red Sea. And you showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants and all the people of his land — because you knew how arrogantly they treated them. And you made a name for yourself, as it is today. And you divided the sea in front of them, so they went through the middle of it on dry land. And you threw their pursuers into the depths like a stone into mighty waters. And you led them by day with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire, to give them light on the road they should go. You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right judgements and true laws, good rules and commandments. And you made known to them your holy sabbath, and gave them commandments and rules and laws through Moses your servant. And you gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought water out of the rock for their thirst, and told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn to give them. But they and our fathers acted arrogantly. They stiffened their necks and wouldn't listen to your commandments. They refused to obey, and they didn't remember the wonders you did among them. They stiffened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and full of kindness, and you didn't abandon them. Even when they made themselves a molten calf and said, This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt, and provoked you greatly, even then, in your great mercy, you didn't abandon them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn't leave them by day, to lead them on the road, and the pillar of fire didn't leave them by night, to give them light on the road they should go. You gave your good Spirit to teach them, and you didn't hold back your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

And you've carried out your words, because you're righteous. And you saw the trouble of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry by the Red Sea. And you showed signs and wonders on Pharaoh and on all his servants and on all the people of his land. Because you knew they dealt proudly against them. So you got yourself a name, the way it is today. And you divided the sea in front of them, so they went through the middle of the sea on dry land. And the ones who chased them you threw into the deeps, like a stone into the mighty waters. You led them by day too in a pillar of cloud, and at night in a pillar of fire, to give them light on the way they should go. You came down on Mount Sinai too and talked with them from heaven, and gave them straight judgments and true teachings, good rules and orders. And you made your holy sabbath known to them, and ordered them orders and rules and teaching by the hand of Moses your servant. And you gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought out water for them from the rock for their thirst. And you promised them they'd go in to take the land you'd sworn to give them. But they and our fathers dealt proudly and made their necks stiff, and wouldn't listen to your orders. And they refused to listen and didn't remember your wonders that you did among them. But they made their necks stiff, and in their rebelling they set up a head to go back to their slavery. But you're a God ready to forgive, gracious and full of mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. And you didn't leave them. Yes, when they'd made themselves a cast calf and said: This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt — and they made great insults — still you in your great mercies didn't leave them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn't go from them by day to lead them on the way, or the pillar of fire by night to show them light and the way they should go. You gave your good Spirit too to teach them, and didn't hold back your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations; Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go. Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

Your great mercies
For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes didn't wear out and their feet didn't swell. And you gave them kingdoms and peoples, and parcelled out their borders. So they took possession of the land of Sihon, the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. And you multiplied their children like the stars of heaven, and brought them into the land you had told their fathers to go in and possess. So the children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued the people of the land before them — the Canaanites — and handed them over, with their kings and the peoples of the land, to do with as they pleased. And they took fortified cities and rich land, and took possession of houses full of good things, wells already dug, vineyards and olive groves and fruit trees in plenty. So they ate and were filled and grew fat, and took their delight in your great goodness. But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They threw your law behind their backs and killed your prophets, who warned them to turn back to you, and they provoked you greatly. So you handed them over to their enemies, who ground them down. And in the time of their trouble, when they cried out to you, you heard them from heaven. And in your great mercy you gave them deliverers, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. But when they had rest, they went back to doing evil in front of you. So you left them in the hand of their enemies, who ruled over them. Yet when they turned back and cried out to you, you heard them from heaven, and many times you delivered them, according to your mercies. And you warned them, to bring them back to your law. But they acted arrogantly and wouldn't listen to your commandments. They sinned against your judgements — which a man will live by if he keeps them — and turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their necks and wouldn't hear. For many years you put up with them, and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. But they wouldn't listen. So you handed them over to the peoples of the lands. Even so, in your great mercy you didn't finish them off or abandon them, because you are a gracious and merciful God. So now, our God — the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant and his mercy — don't let all this trouble seem small to you: the trouble that has come on us, on our kings and our leaders, on our priests and our prophets, on our fathers and on all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria to this day. You have been just in everything that has come on us. You have done right, and we have done wickedly. Our kings and our leaders, our priests and our fathers haven't kept your law or listened to your commandments and the warnings you gave them. Even in their own kingdom, and in all the great goodness you gave them, and in the large rich land you set before them, they didn't serve you or turn from their wicked ways. Look at us — we are slaves today. And the land you gave our fathers, to eat its fruit and its good things, look at us: we are slaves in it. And it yields a rich harvest to the kings you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please, and we are in great distress. And because of all this we are making a binding agreement and writing it down. And our leaders, our Levites and our priests are setting their seals to it.
Yes, forty years you kept them in the wilderness, and they went short of nothing. Their clothes didn't wear out and their feet didn't swell. You gave them kingdoms and nations too and divided them into corners. So they took over the land of Sihon and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. You made their children as many as the stars of the sky too, and brought them into the land you'd promised their fathers they'd go in to take. So the children went in and took the land. And you brought down in front of them the people of the land, the Canaanites, and handed them over into their hands, with their kings and the peoples of the land, so they could do with them what they wanted. And they took strong towns and a rich land, and took houses full of all good things, wells dug out, vineyards and olive groves and fruit trees in plenty. So they ate and were filled and got fat, and took delight in your great goodness. But they weren't obedient and rebelled against you, and threw your teaching behind their backs. And they killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them to you, and they made great insults. So you handed them over into the hand of the ones against them, who troubled them. And in the time of their trouble, when they cried out to you, you heard them from heaven. And according to your great mercies you gave them saviours who saved them out of the hand of the ones against them. But after they had rest, they did evil again in front of you. So you left them in the hand of the ones against them, so they ruled over them. But when they came back and cried out to you, you heard them from heaven. And plenty of times you rescued them according to your mercies. And you testified against them, to bring them back to your teaching. But they dealt proudly and wouldn't listen to your orders, but sinned against your judgments — which a man does and lives by. And they pulled away their shoulder and made their neck stiff and wouldn't hear. But for plenty of years you put up with them and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. But they wouldn't listen. So you handed them over into the hand of the peoples of the lands. But for your great mercies you didn't completely finish them or leave them. Because you're a gracious and merciful God. So now, our God, the great, the mighty and the terrifying God, who keeps covenant and mercy — don't let all the trouble seem small in front of you that's come on us, on our kings, on our leaders and on our priests and on our prophets and on our fathers and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria right to today. But you're righteous in everything that's come on us. Because you've done right, but we've done wickedly. And our kings, our leaders, our priests and our fathers haven't kept your teaching or listened to your orders and your testimonies that you testified against them. Because they haven't served you in their kingdom and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the big and rich land you set in front of them. And they didn't turn from their wicked works. Look — we're servants today. And as for the land you gave our fathers to eat its fruit and its good — look, we're servants in it. And it gives plenty of increase to the kings you've set over us because of our sins. And they have power over our bodies and over our cattle as they want, and we're in great trouble. And because of all this we make a sure covenant and write it. And our leaders, our Levites and our priests seal it.

Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.
