So they read from the book, from the law of God, clearly, and gave the sense of it, so the people understood the reading. And Nehemiah, the Tirshatha, the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were teaching the people, said to all of them, This day is holy to the Lord your God. Don't mourn and don't weep. Because all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law. Then he said to them, Go your way. Eat the rich food and drink something sweet, and send portions to anyone who has nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Don't be sad — the joy of the Lord is your strength. So the Levites quietened all the people, saying, Be still, because the day is holy. Don't be grieved. And all the people went their way to eat and drink and send helpings, and to celebrate greatly, because they had understood the words that had been explained to them.

So the people went out and brought them back, and made themselves shelters, each one on his own roof, and in their courtyards, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square by the Water Gate, and in the square by the Gate of Ephraim. And the whole assembly of those who had come back from captivity made shelters and sat under them. Because from the days of Jeshua son of Nun to that day, the Israelites hadn't done this. And there was very great gladness. And day by day, from the first day to the last, he read from the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a special assembly, as the rule required.
