Now when the wall was built and I had set the doors in place, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed, I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel — because he was a faithful man and feared God more than most. And these came up from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon and Immer, but couldn't prove their father's house or their descent, or whether they were from Israel: the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda — six hundred and forty-two. And of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, and the sons of Barzillai, who had married one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name. These looked for their family record among those registered by descent, and it wasn't found. So they were put out of the priesthood as unclean. And the Tirshatha, the governor, told them they were not to eat any of the most holy things until a priest stood up with Urim and Thummim. The whole assembly together came to forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty, not counting their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. And they had two hundred and forty-five singing men and singing women. Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five, their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and their donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty. And some of the heads of families gave toward the work. The Tirshatha, the governor, gave to the treasury a thousand drams of gold, fifty bowls and five hundred and thirty priests' garments. And some of the heads of families gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver. And what the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, two thousand pounds of silver, and sixty-seven priests' garments. So the priests and the Levites and the gatekeepers and the singers, and some of the people, and the temple servants, and all Israel, settled in their towns. And when the seventh month came, the Israelites were in their towns.
