The death of John
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said to his servants, This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why these powers are at work in him. Because Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. Because John had said to him, It isn't lawful for you to have her. And she, prompted beforehand by her mother, said, Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist. And the king was sorry. But because of his oath, and because of those sitting with him, he gave the order for it to be done. And he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl. And she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took up the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven he blessed and broke them, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowd. And they all ate and had enough. And they picked up twelve baskets full of the pieces left over. And those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But straight away Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart. It is I. Don't be afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter had got down out of the boat he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me. And straight away Jesus put out his hand and caught him, and said to him, You of little faith — why did you doubt? And when they had got into the boat, the wind dropped. Then those in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. And when they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent word into all the country round about, and brought him everyone who was ill, and begged him to let them just touch the edge of his cloak. And everyone who touched it was made completely well.

Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
