The sower
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. And great crowds gathered to him, so that he got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the shore. And he told them many things in parables, saying: Look, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground where it hadn't much soil, and it sprang up straight away, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But other seed fell on good ground and brought forth a crop — a hundred times, sixty times, thirty times. Anyone who has ears to hear, let him hear. And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you speak to them in parables? He answered them, Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it hasn't been given. Because whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have plenty. But whoever hasn't, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: because seeing they don't see, and hearing they don't hear, and they don't understand. And in them the prophecy of Esaias is fulfilled, which says: Hearing you will hear and not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive. Because this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes — in case they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Because I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men have longed to see what you see, and haven't seen it, and to hear what you hear, and haven't heard it. But when the blade sprang up and produced a crop, the tares appeared as well. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where did the tares come from then? He said to them, An enemy has done this. The servants said to him, Do you want us to go and pull them up? But he said, No. Because while you are pulling up the tares, you might root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. And at harvest time I will say to the reapers, Gather the tares first and tie them in bundles to burn them. But gather the wheat into my barn.

Mustard seed and yeast

But when it is grown it is the biggest among the garden plants, and becomes a tree, so the birds of the air come and nest in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like yeast, which a woman took and worked into three measures of flour, until the whole lot had risen. Jesus said all these things to the crowd in parables, and without a parable he didn't speak to them, so that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled: I will open my mouth in parables. I will say things kept secret from the foundation of the world. Then Jesus sent the crowd away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the tares in the field. He answered them, The one who sows the good seed is the Son of man. The field is the world. The good seed are the children of the kingdom. But the tares are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world. And the reapers are the angels. So just as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, that is how it will be at the end of this world. Treasure, pearl and net
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it he hid it, and for joy over it he went and sold everything he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he had found one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, that gathered fish of every kind. When it was full they dragged it to shore, and sat down and gathered the good into containers, but threw the bad away. That is how it will be at the end of the world. And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet isn't without honour, except in his own country and in his own house. And he didn't do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.
