And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, came back from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, tempted by the devil for forty days. And in those days he ate nothing. And when he had opened the book he found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are bruised, and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. And everyone spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words that came out of his mouth. And they said, Isn't this Joseph's son? And he said to them, You will certainly quote me this proverb: Physician, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard was done in Capernaum, do here in your own country as well. And he said, I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you truly, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months and there was a great famine through all the land. But Elias was sent to none of them, only to a widow at Sarepta, a town in Sidon. And there were many people with leprosy in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet. And none of them was cleansed, only Naaman the Syrian. And everyone in the synagogue, when they heard this, was filled with rage. And they got up and threw him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill their town was built on, so they could throw him off it. But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.

Now when the sun was setting, everyone who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him. And he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons came out of many as well, crying out and saying, You are Christ the Son of God. And he rebuked them and wouldn't let them speak, because they knew he was the Christ. And when it was day he left and went to a lonely place. And the people looked for him and came to him, and tried to keep him from leaving them.
