John's preaching
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar — Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, and Annas and Caiaphas being high priests — the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he came into all the country round the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet: The voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley will be filled in, and every mountain and hill brought low. The crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth. And all flesh will see the salvation of God. Then he said to the crowds who came out to be baptised by him, You brood of vipers, who warned you to run from the anger to come? So bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. And don't start saying to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. Because I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham out of these stones. And already the axe is laid to the root of the trees. So every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. And the people asked him, saying, What should we do then? He answered them, Whoever has two coats, let him share with the one who has none. And whoever has food, let him do the same. Then tax collectors came to be baptised as well, and said to him, Master, what should we do? And he said to them, Collect no more than what you are appointed to. And the soldiers asked him too, saying, And what should we do? And he said to them, Don't extort money from anyone, and don't accuse anyone falsely. And be content with your wages. And as the people were in expectation, and everyone was wondering in their hearts about John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, I baptise you with water. But one mightier than I am is coming, and I am not worthy to undo the latchet of his shoes. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clear his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his barn. But he will burn the chaff with fire that never goes out. And with many other words of encouragement he preached to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, rebuked by him about Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and about all the evil things Herod had done, added this on top of it all — he shut John up in prison.

And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
