Teach us to pray

And once, as he was praying in a certain place, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. And he said to them, When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, holy is your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is in debt to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. And he said to them, Which of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, Friend, lend me three loaves, because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey and I have nothing to set in front of him — and the man inside answers and says, Don't bother me. The door is shut now, and my children are in bed with me. I can't get up and give you anything. I tell you, even if he won't get up and give it to him because he is his friend, yet because of the man's persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. Because everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks bread of any of you who is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? So if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

And it happened that as he was praying in a certain place, when he'd stopped, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, the way John taught his disciples too. And he said to them: When you pray, say: Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, the way it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins. Because we forgive everyone who owes us too. And don't lead us into testing, but rescue us from evil. And he said to them: Which of you will have a mate and will go to him at midnight and say to him: Mate, lend me three loaves. Because a mate of mine has come to me on his journey, and I've got nothing to set in front of him. And he from inside will answer: Don't trouble me. The door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you. I say to you, though he won't get up and give him because he's his mate, still because of his going on at him he'll get up and give him as many as he needs. And I say to you: Ask, and it'll be given you. Look for, and you'll find. Knock, and it'll be opened to you. Because everyone who asks takes. And the one who looks finds. And to the one who knocks it'll be opened. If a son asks bread of any of you who's a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a snake instead of a fish? Or if he asks an egg, will he give him a scorpion? So if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to the ones who ask him?

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

A house divided

And he was driving out a demon, and it was mute. And when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people were amazed. But some of them said, He drives out demons by Beelzebub, the chief of the demons. And others, testing him, looked for a sign from heaven from him. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin, and a house divided against a house falls. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I drive out demons by Beelzebub. And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your own sons drive them out? So they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come on you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his goods are safe. But when someone stronger than he is comes on him and overpowers him, he takes away the armour he trusted in, and divides up his plunder. Whoever isn't with me is against me. And whoever doesn't gather with me scatters. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it walks through dry places looking for rest. And finding none, it says, I will go back to my house that I came out of. And when it comes it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself. And they go in and live there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first.

And he was throwing out a demon, and it was dumb. And it happened when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke. And the people were shocked. But some of them said: He throws out demons through Beelzebub the leader of the demons. And others, testing him, looked for a sign from heaven from him. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to waste. And a house divided against a house falls. If Satan is divided against himself too, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I throw out demons through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub throw out demons, who do your sons throw them out by? So they'll be your judges. But if I with the finger of God throw out demons, then the kingdom of God has come on you for sure. When a strong man armed keeps his palace, his goods are in peace. But when a stronger one than him comes on him and wins against him, he takes from him all his armour that he trusted in, and divides his plunder. The one who isn't with me is against me. And the one who doesn't gather with me scatters. When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he walks through dry places looking for rest. And finding none, he says: I'll go back to my house I came out of. And when he comes, he finds it swept and set in order. Then he goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than himself. And they go in and live there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first.

And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

The sign of Jonah

And as he said these things, a woman in the crowd lifted up her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that nursed you. But he said, Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it. And when the people were crowding thickly together he began to say, This is an evil generation. They look for a sign, and no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonas the prophet. Because as Jonas was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of man will be to this generation. The queen of the south will rise up in the judgement with the men of this generation and condemn them. Because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon — and look, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineve will rise up in the judgement with this generation and condemn it. Because they repented at the preaching of Jonas — and look, a greater than Jonas is here. Nobody lights a lamp and puts it in a hidden place, or under a bushel, but on a stand, so those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye. So when your eye is clear, your whole body is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body is full of darkness too. So take care that the light in you isn't darkness. If your whole body is full of light, with no part dark, the whole will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.

And it happened as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice: Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts you sucked. But he said: Yes, rather blessed are the ones who hear the word of God and keep it. And when the people were gathered thick together, he started to say: This is an evil generation. They look for a sign. And no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. Because the way Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, that's how the Son of Man will be to this generation too. The queen of the south will get up in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them. Because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And look — a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will get up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it. Because they turned back at the preaching of Jonah. And look — a greater than Jonah is here. Nobody, when he's lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so the ones who come in can see the light. The light of the body is the eye. So when your eye is single, your whole body is full of light too. But when your eye is bad, your body is full of darkness too. So watch out that the light in you isn't darkness. So if your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole will be full of light, the way when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.

And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

31

The queen of the south will rise up in the judgement with the men of this generation and condemn them. Because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon — and look, a greater than Solomon is here.

Plain English

The queen of the south will get up in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them. Because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And look — a greater than Solomon is here.

King James Version, 1611

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

34

The lamp of the body is the eye. So when your eye is clear, your whole body is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body is full of darkness too.

King James Version, 1611

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

35

So take care that the light in you isn't darkness.

Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

36

If your whole body is full of light, with no part dark, the whole will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.

If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Trouble to the Pharisees

And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And he went in and sat down at the table. And when the Pharisee saw it he was surprised that he hadn't washed first, before dinner. And the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. You fools. Didn't the one who made the outside make the inside as well? But give what is inside to the poor, and look — everything is clean for you. But trouble is coming to you, Pharisees. Because you tithe mint and rue and every kind of herb, and pass over justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Trouble is coming to you, Pharisees. Because you love the best seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Trouble is coming to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. Because you are like unmarked graves, and men walk over them without knowing. Then one of the lawyers answered him, Master, in saying this you insult us too. And he said, Trouble is coming to you lawyers as well. Because you load men with burdens too heavy to carry, and you yourselves won't touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Trouble is coming to you. Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. So you bear witness that you approve of the deeds of your fathers. Because they killed them, and you build their tombs. That is why the wisdom of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute — so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple. I tell you the truth, it will be required of this generation. Trouble is coming to you lawyers. Because you have taken away the key of knowledge. You didn't go in yourselves, and you got in the way of those who were going in. And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, trying to catch something out of his mouth so they could accuse him.

And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to eat with him. And he went in and sat down to eat. And when the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised he hadn't first washed before dinner. And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the platter clean. But your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. You fools, didn't the one who made what's outside make what's inside too? But give what you've got as alms. And look — everything is clean to you. But trouble is coming to you Pharisees. Because you give a tenth of mint and rue and all kinds of herbs, and go past judgment and the love of God. You ought to have done these, and not to leave the others undone. Trouble is coming to you Pharisees. Because you love the top seats in the meeting houses and greetings in the markets. Trouble is coming to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. Because you're like graves that don't show, and the men who walk over them aren't aware of them. Then one of the lawyers answered him: Teacher, saying this you insult us too. And he said: Trouble is coming to you lawyers too. Because you load men with loads hard to carry, and you yourselves don't touch the loads with one of your fingers. Trouble is coming to you. Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you agree with the deeds of your fathers. Because they truly killed them, and you build their tombs. So the wisdom of God said too: I'll send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they'll kill and chase out. So the blood of all the prophets, spilt from the foundation of the world, can be asked back of this generation — from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who died between the altar and the temple. Truly I say to you, it'll be asked back of this generation. Trouble is coming to you lawyers. Because you've taken away the key of knowledge. You didn't go in yourselves, and the ones who were going in you stopped. And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees started to push him hard and to draw him out about plenty of things, lying in wait for him and looking to catch something out of his mouth, so they could charge him.

And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
