The sabbath year
The Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai: 'Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you come into the land I am giving you, the land itself must keep a sabbath to the Lord.' Six years you will sow your field, and six years you will prune your vineyard and gather in its fruit. 'But the seventh year is to be a sabbath of rest for the land, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your field or prune your vineyard.' You must not reap what grows by itself of your harvest, and you must not gather the grapes of your untended vine. It is a year of rest for the land. The sabbath of the land will be food for you — for you and for your servant and for your female servant and for your hired servant and for the stranger staying with you, And for your cattle and for the animals in your land. All its harvest will be food.

The jubilee

Redeeming land and people
If your brother has become poor and sold some of his possession, and if any of his family comes to redeem it, then he will redeem what his brother sold. If the man has nobody to redeem it and he's able himself to redeem it, Then let him count the years since he sold it, and give back what's left to the man he sold it to, so he can return to his possession. But if he can't get back what's given him, then what he sold will stay in the hand of the one who bought it till the year of jubilee. And in the jubilee it will go out, and he will return to his possession. If a man sells a house in a walled town, then he can redeem it within a whole year after it's sold. He will have a full year to redeem it. If it isn't redeemed within a full year, then the house in the walled town will be settled forever on the one who bought it, through his generations. It won't go out in the jubilee. But the houses of the villages with no wall round them will be counted as the fields of the country. They can be redeemed, and they will go out in the jubilee. But as for the towns of the Levites and the houses of the towns they own, the Levites can redeem them at any time. If a man buys from the Levites, then the house that was sold and the town he owns will go out in the year of jubilee. Because the houses of the towns of the Levites are what they own among the Israelites. But the field of the open land round their towns can't be sold, because it's their possession forever. If your brother becomes poor and cannot support himself among you, help him — whether he is a stranger or a traveller — so he can keep living beside you. Don't take interest or increase from him. But fear your God, so your brother can live with you. You must not give him your money at interest or lend him your food for increase. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God. If your brother with you has become poor and is sold to you, you must not make him serve as a slave. But he will be with you as a hired servant and as a traveller. He will serve you till the year of jubilee. Then he will go out from you, he and his children with him, and return to his own family, and return to what his fathers owned. Because they're my servants that I brought out of the land of Egypt. They must not be sold as slaves are sold. You must not rule over him harshly, but you will fear your God. Your male and female slaves that you will have will be from the nations round you. From them you can buy male and female slaves. And of the children of the strangers staying with you, from them you can buy, and of their families with you that they fathered in your land. And they will be yours to own. You can leave them as an inheritance for your children after you, to own as a possession. They'll be your slaves forever. But over your brothers, the Israelites, you must not rule harshly over one another. If a stranger or a traveller with you gets rich, and your brother with him gets poor and sells himself to the stranger or traveller with you, or to a member of the stranger's family — After he's sold he can be redeemed again. One of his brothers can redeem him. Either his uncle or his uncle's son can redeem him, or any close relative of his family can redeem him. Or if he's able, he can redeem himself. He will count with the one who bought him from the year he was sold to him to the year of jubilee. And the price of his sale will be according to the number of years, according to the time of a hired servant. If there are still many years, according to them he will give back the price of his redemption out of the money he was bought for. And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile. But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile. Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession. And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee. Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God. And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant: But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile: And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return. For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen. Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God. Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour. And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family: After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself. And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him. If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for. And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption. And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight. And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him. For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
