Three hundred men
Then Jerubbaal, that is Gideon, and all the people with him got up early and camped by the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh in the valley. And the Lord said to Gideon, There are too many people with you for me to give the Midianites into their hands. Israel might boast against me and say, My own hand has saved me. So now announce to the people, Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him turn back and leave Mount Gilead. And twenty-two thousand of them turned back, and ten thousand were left. And the LORD said to Gideon, There are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. The one I tell you to take will go with you, and the one I tell you not to take will not go. So he brought the people down to the water, and the Lord said to Gideon, Set apart everyone who laps the water with his tongue the way a dog laps, and everyone who kneels down to drink. And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men. All the rest of the people knelt down to drink. And the Lord said to Gideon, By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand. Let all the rest go home. So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel home to their tents and kept the three hundred. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

And that same night the Lord said to him, Get up and go down to the camp, because I have given it into your hand. But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Phurah your servant, and you will hear what they are saying. After that your hands will be strengthened to go down to the camp. So he went down with Phurah his servant to the outposts of the armed men in the camp. And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the east lay along the valley like locusts for number. And their camels were beyond counting, like the sand on the seashore. And when Gideon got there, a man was telling his companion a dream. He said, Listen — I had a dream. A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the camp of Midian, struck a tent and knocked it over, so the tent lay flat. And his companion answered, That is nothing but the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has given Midian and the whole camp into his hand. And when Gideon heard the dream told and what it meant, he worshipped. And he went back to the camp of Israel and said, Get up. The Lord has given the camp of Midian into your hand. And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty jars and torches inside the jars. And he said to them, Watch me, and do the same. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly what I do. When I blow the trumpet, I and everyone with me, then you blow your trumpets too, all round the camp, and shout: For the Lord and for Gideon. So Gideon and the hundred men with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars in their hands. And the three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars, and held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands to blow, and they shouted: The sword of the Lord and of Gideon. And every man stood in his place around the camp. And the whole camp ran, and shouted, and fled. And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD turned every man's sword against his fellow throughout the camp. And the army fled as far as Bethshittah toward Zererath, to the edge of Abelmeholah, near Tabbath. And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and Asher and all Manasseh, and they chased the Midianites. And Gideon sent messengers through all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites and take the waters ahead of them, as far as Bethbarah and the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were called out and took the waters as far as Bethbarah and the Jordan. And they captured two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb, and they chased Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

And the army ran to Beth Shittah towards Zererath, to the border of Abel Meholah by Tabbath. And the men of Israel gathered from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and chased the Midianites. And his companion answered, That is nothing but the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has given Midian and the whole camp into his hand.
And his mate answered and said: This is nothing but the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has handed Midian and the whole camp over into his hand.
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
And when Gideon heard the dream told and what it meant, he worshipped. And he went back to the camp of Israel and said, Get up. The Lord has given the camp of Midian into your hand.
And when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and what it meant, he bowed down. And he came back to the camp of Israel and said: Get up, because the Lord has handed the camp of Midian over into your hand.
And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
