Midian oppresses Israel

And the Israelites did evil in the LORD's eyes, so the Lord handed them over to Midian for seven years. And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the Israelites made dens for themselves in the mountains, along with caves and strongholds. And whenever Israel had sown their crops, the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites and the people of the east came up against them. And they camped against them and destroyed the produce of the land as far as Gaza, and left nothing for Israel to live on — not a sheep, not an ox, not a donkey. Because they came up with their livestock and their tents, and they came like locusts for number. They and their camels were beyond counting, and they came into the land to ruin it. So Israel was brought very low because of the Midianites, and the Israelites cried out to the Lord. And when the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, the Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites, who said to them: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of everyone who oppressed you. I drove them out before you and gave you their land. And I said to you, I am the Lord your God. Don't fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live. But you haven't obeyed my voice.

And the people of Israel did what was wrong in the eyes of the Lord. And the Lord handed them over into the hand of Midian seven years. And the hand of Midian was strong against Israel. And because of the Midianites the people of Israel made themselves the dens in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. And when Israel had sown, the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites and the people of the east came up against them. And they camped against them and wrecked the crops of the land as far as Gaza, and left no food in Israel, and no sheep or ox or donkey. Because they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came like locusts for number. Both they and their camels were past counting. And they came into the land to wreck it. So Israel was made very poor because of the Midianites. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. And when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel, who said to them: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. I brought you up out of Egypt and brought you out of the house of slaves. And I got you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of everyone who pressed you, and drove them out from in front of you and gave you their land. And I said to you: I'm the Lord your God. Don't fear the gods of the Amorites whose land you're living in. But you haven't listened to my voice.

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds. And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it. And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD. And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

The angel and Gideon

And an angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. And his son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour. And Gideon said to him, Oh my lord, if the Lord is with us, then why has all this happened to us? And where are all his miracles that our fathers told us about, saying, Didn't the Lord bring us up out of Egypt? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites. And the Lord turned to him and said, Go in this strength of yours, and you will save Israel out of the hand of Midian. Haven't I sent you? And he said to him, Oh my Lord, how can I save Israel? Look — my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. And the Lord said to him, I will be with you, and you will strike down the Midianites as though they were one man. And he said to him, If you are pleased with me, then show me a sign that it is really you talking to me. Don't leave here, I beg you, until I come back to you and bring out my offering and set it before you. And he said, I will wait until you come back. And Gideon went in and prepared a young goat, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, brought them out to him under the oak, and presented them. And the angel of God said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the end of the staff in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. And fire came up out of the rock and burned up the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. And when Gideon realised he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Oh no, LORD God! I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face. And the Lord said to him, Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. You won't die. Then Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it Jehovahshalom. It is still at Ophrah of the Abiezrites to this day.

And the Lord said to him: Peace be with you. Don't be frightened. You won't die. Then Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. It's still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites to this day.

And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face. And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Pulling down Baal's altar

And that same night the LORD said to him, Take your father's young bull, the second bull of seven years, and pull down the altar of Baal your father has, and cut down the grove beside it. And build an altar to the LORD your God on top of this rock, in the ordered place. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove you cut down. So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was afraid of his father's household and the men of the town, he couldn't do it by day, so he did it at night. And when the men of the city got up early in the morning, there was the altar of Baal pulled down, the grove beside it cut down, and the second bull offered on the altar that had been built. And they said to one another, Who has done this? And when they asked around and looked into it, they said, Gideon son of Joash has done it. Then the men of the city said to Joash, Bring your son out so he may die, because he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the grove beside it. And Joash said to all who stood against him, Are you going to plead Baal's case? Are you going to save him? Whoever pleads for him will be put to death before morning. If he is a god, let him plead his own case, since somebody has pulled down his altar. So on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, meaning, Let Baal plead against him, because he pulled down his altar. Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east joined forces, and crossed over and camped in the valley of Jezreel. But the Spirit of the LORD came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, and Abiezer gathered behind him. And he sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and they too were called out behind him. And he sent messengers to Asher and Zebulun and Naphtali, and they came up to meet them. And Gideon said to God, If you are going to save Israel by my hand, as you have said — Look, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and the ground all round is dry, then I will know you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said. And that is what happened. He got up early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, and wrung a bowlful of water out of it. And Gideon said to God, Don't be angry with me. Let me speak just once more. Let me test it just once more with the fleece. This time let the fleece be dry, and let there be dew on all the ground. And God did so that night. The fleece alone was dry, and there was dew on all the ground.

And that same night the Lord said to him: Take your father's young bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal your father's got, and cut down the sacred pole beside it. And build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of this rock, in the proper way. And take the second bull and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the sacred pole you cut down. Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did what the Lord had said to him. And because he was too frightened of his father's household and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. And when the men of the town got up early in the morning, there was the altar of Baal pulled down and the sacred pole beside it cut down, and the second bull offered on the altar that was built. And they said to each other: Who's done this? And when they asked and searched, they said: Gideon son of Joash has done this. Then the men of the town said to Joash: Bring your son out, so he can die — because he's pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the sacred pole beside it. And Joash said to everyone standing against him: Are you going to argue for Baal? Are you going to save him? Whoever argues for him will be put to death this morning. If he's a god, let him argue for himself, because someone's pulled down his altar. So that day he called him Jerub-Baal — let Baal argue against him, because he's pulled down his altar. Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east gathered together and went over and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. But the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him. And he sent messengers through all Manasseh, and they gathered behind him too. And he sent messengers to Asher and to Zebulun and to Naphtali, and they came up to meet them. And Gideon said to God: If you'll save Israel by my hand the way you've said — look, I'll put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there's dew on the fleece only and it's dry on all the ground, then I'll know you'll save Israel by my hand the way you've said. And that's what happened. Because he got up early the next day and pressed the fleece together and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. And Gideon said to God: Don't be angry with me, and I'll speak just this once. Let me test it just once more with the fleece. Let it be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground. And that night God did it. It was dry only on the fleece, and there was dew on all the ground.

And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it: And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down. Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night. And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it. And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar. Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar. Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him. And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
