Ephraim's complaint

And the men of Ephraim said to him, Why have you treated us like this? Why didn't you call us when you went to fight the Midianites? And they took it up with him sharply. And he said to them, What have I done now compared with you? Aren't the leftover grapes of Ephraim better than the whole vintage of Abiezer? God gave the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, into your hands. What was I able to do compared with you? And when he said that, their anger toward him died down. And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the three hundred men with him — worn out, but still after them. And he said to the men of Succoth, Please give some loaves of bread to the men following me. They are worn out, and I am chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. And the officials of Succoth said, Have you got Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand already, that we should give bread to your army? And Gideon said, When the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with thorns of the wilderness and with briers. And he went up from there to Penuel and said the same to them, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had. And he said to the men of Penuel as well, When I come back in peace, I will break down this tower. Now Zebah and Zalmunna were at Karkor with their armies, about fifteen thousand men, all that was left of the whole army of the people of the east. A hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen. And Gideon went up by the route of the tent-dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the camp while it thought it was safe. And when Zebah and Zalmunna ran, he chased them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and threw the whole army into panic.

And the men of Ephraim said to him: Why have you treated us like this, that you didn't call us when you went to fight the Midianites? And they argued with him hard. And he said to them: What have I done now compared with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the whole grape harvest of Abiezer? God has handed the leaders of Midian over into your hands, Oreb and Zeeb. And what was I able to do compared with you? Then their anger towards him died down when he said that. And Gideon came to the Jordan and went over, he and the three hundred men with him, worn out but still chasing. And he said to the men of Sukkoth: Give some loaves of bread to the people following me, please. Because they're worn out, and I'm chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. And the leaders of Sukkoth said: Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand now, that we should give bread to your army? And Gideon said: When the Lord has handed Zebah and Zalmunna over into my hand, then I'll tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briars. And he went up from there to Peniel and spoke to them the same way. And the men of Peniel answered him the way the men of Sukkoth had answered. And he spoke to the men of Peniel too: When I come back in peace, I'll pull down this tower. Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their armies, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the armies of the people of the east. Because a hundred and twenty thousand men who drew the sword had fallen. And Gideon went up by the way of the ones who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the camp. Because the camp felt safe. And when Zebah and Zalmunna ran, he chased them and caught the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and threw the whole army into a panic.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply. And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian. And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him. And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure. And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

And Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle before the sun was up. And he caught a young man from Succoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the officials and elders of Succoth, seventy-seven men. And he came to the men of Succoth and said, Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, the ones you taunted me about, saying, Have you got Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand already, that we should give bread to your worn-out men? And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. And he pulled down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the town. Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, What sort of men were they that you killed at Tabor? And they answered, They were like you. Every one of them looked like the son of a king. And he said, They were my brothers, my own mother's sons. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had let them live I wouldn't kill you. And he said to Jether his firstborn, Get up and kill them. But the boy didn't draw his sword. He was afraid, because he was still only a boy. Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Get up yourself and do it. As the man is, so is his strength. I won't rule over you

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule over us — you, and your son, and your son's son as well. Because you have saved us out of the hand of Midian. And Gideon said to them, I won't rule over you, and my son won't rule over you. The Lord will rule over you. And Gideon said to them, I have one request. Give me every man the earrings from his share of the plunder. Because they had golden earrings, being Ishmaelites. And they answered, We will gladly give them. And they spread out a cloak, and every man threw in the earrings from his plunder. And the weight of the golden earrings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels of gold — besides the ornaments and the pendants and the purple clothing worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the chains from their camels' necks. And Gideon made a priestly apron out of it and put it in his town, in Ophrah. And all Israel went whoring after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house. So Midian was brought down before the Israelites, and they lifted their heads no more. And the land had quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon. And Jerubbaal son of Joash went and lived in his own house. And Gideon had seventy sons of his own body, because he had many wives. And his concubine at Shechem bore him a son as well, and he named him Abimelech. And Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites. And as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned again and went whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god. And the Israelites didn't remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side. And they showed no kindness to the house of Jerubbaal — that is, Gideon — for all the good he had done for Israel.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon: Rule over us, you and your son and your son's son too. Because you've got us out of the hand of Midian. And Gideon said to them: I won't rule over you, and my son won't rule over you. The Lord will rule over you. And Gideon said to them: I'd like to ask you one thing — that every man give me the earrings from his plunder. Because they had gold earrings, since they were Ishmaelites. And they answered: We'll gladly give them. And they spread out a cloak, and every man threw the earrings from his plunder into it. And the weight of the gold earrings he asked for was a thousand seven hundred shekels of gold — besides the crescents and the pendants and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were round their camels' necks. And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his town, in Ophrah. And all Israel went whoring after it there. And it turned into a trap for Gideon and for his house. So Midian was brought down in front of the people of Israel, and they didn't lift up their heads any more. And the country had rest forty years in the days of Gideon. And Jerub-Baal son of Joash went and lived in his own house. And Gideon had seventy sons of his own body, because he had plenty of wives. And the woman he had at Shechem had him a son too, and he called his name Abimelek. And Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the grave of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. And as soon as Gideon was dead, the people of Israel turned round and went whoring after the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. And the people of Israel didn't remember the Lord their God, who'd got them out of the hands of all the ones against them on every side. And they didn't show kindness to the house of Jerub-Baal, who is Gideon, for all the good he'd done for Israel.

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks. And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon. And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god. And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side: Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
