And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman there, one of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up and told his father and mother, I have seen a woman at Timnath, one of the daughters of the Philistines. Now get her for me as a wife. And there was a young lion, roaring at him. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on him, and he tore the lion apart as easily as a man tears a young goat, and he had nothing in his hand. And after a time he came back to take her, and he turned aside to look at the carcass of the lion. And there was a swarm of bees in the lion's body, and honey. And he took some of it in his hands and went on his way, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave them some, and they ate. But he didn't tell them he had taken the honey out of the lion's carcass. So his father went down to the woman, and Samson held a feast there, as young men used to do. And when they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. And Samson said to them, Let me put a riddle to you. If you can work it out and tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes. But if you can't tell me, then you will give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes. And they said to him, Put your riddle. Let us hear it. And he said to them: Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet. And for three days they couldn't work out the riddle. And on the seventh day they said to Samson's wife, Entice your husband to tell us the riddle, or we will burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you called us here to take what we have? And Samson's wife wept in front of him and said, You just hate me. You don't love me. You have put a riddle to my people and haven't told me the answer. And he said to her, Look, I haven't told my own father or mother. Why should I tell you? And she wept in front of him for the seven days of the feast. And on the seventh day he told her, because she wore him down. And she told the riddle to her own people. And the men of the town said to him on the seventh day, before the sun went down: What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? And he said to them, If you hadn't ploughed with my heifer, you wouldn't have worked out my riddle. And the Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men and took what they had, and gave the changes of clothes to those who had answered the riddle. And his anger burned, and he went up to his father's house. And Samson's wife was given to the companion who had been his best man.

And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house. But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
