The angel and Manoah's wife
And the Israelites did evil in the LORD's eyes again, and the Lord handed them over to the Philistines for forty years. And there was a man from Zorah, of the clan of the Danites, named Manoah. And his wife was barren and had no children. And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, Look — you are barren and have no children. But you will conceive and bear a son. So be careful now. Don't drink wine or strong drink, and don't eat anything unclean. Because you will conceive and bear a son, and no razor is to come on his head. The boy will be a Nazarite to God from the womb, and he will begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. Then the woman came and told her husband, A man of God came to me, and he looked like an angel of God, very terrible. But I didn't ask him where he came from, and he didn't tell me his name. But he said to me, You will conceive and bear a son. So now drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, because the boy will be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death. Then Manoah begged the Lord and said, Oh my Lord, let the man of God you sent come to us again, and teach us what to do with the boy who is to be born. And God listened to Manoah's voice, and the angel of God came to the woman again while she was sitting in the field. But Manoah her husband wasn't with her. So the woman hurried and ran and told her husband, Look — the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me. And Manoah got up and went after his wife and came to the man, and said to him, Are you the man who spoke to my wife? And he said, I am. And Manoah said, Now when your words come true, what is to be the rule for the boy, and what is he to do? And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Let your wife be careful of everything I told her. She mustn't eat anything that comes from the vine, or drink wine or strong drink, or eat anything unclean. Let her keep everything I commanded her. And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, Please let us keep you here until we have prepared a young goat for you. And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Even if you keep me here, I won't eat your food. But if you want to offer a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord. Because Manoah didn't know he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, What is your name, so we can honour you when your words come true? And the angel of the LORD said to him, Why do you ask after my name, seeing it is secret? So Manoah took a young goat with a grain offering and offered it on a rock to the Lord. And the angel did a wonderful thing while Manoah and his wife looked on. Because as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife saw it, and fell face down to the ground. And the angel of the Lord didn't appear to Manoah and his wife again. Then Manoah knew he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said to his wife, We are certainly going to die, because we have seen God. But his wife said to him, If the Lord had wanted to kill us, he wouldn't have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands. And he wouldn't have shown us all this, or told us things like this now. And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. And the boy grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him at times in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord: Let us keep you here, please, till we've got a young goat ready for you. And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah: Though you keep me, I won't eat your food. And if you get a burnt offering ready, you'll offer it to the Lord. Because Manoah didn't know he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord: What's your name, so we can honour you when what you've said comes about? And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him? And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe. And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD. And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour? And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret? So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and Manoah and his wife looked on. And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
