Jephthah brought back
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead fathered Jephthah. And Gilead's wife bore him sons. And when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, You won't inherit anything in our father's house, because you are the son of another woman. So Jephthah ran from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. And a crowd of worthless men gathered around Jephthah and went out with him. And after a while the Ammonites made war on Israel. And when the Ammonites made war on Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob. And they said to Jephthah, Come and be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites. And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now, when you are in trouble? And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, That is exactly why we have come back to you now. Come with us and fight the Ammonites, and be head over everyone living in Gilead. And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, If you take me home to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them to me, will I be your head? And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, The Lord is witness between us if we don't do exactly as you say. So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord at Mizpeh.

And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now, when you are in trouble?
And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead: Didn't you hate me and throw me out of my father's house? So why have you come to me now when you're in trouble?
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, That is exactly why we have come back to you now. Come with us and fight the Ammonites, and be head over everyone living in Gilead.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord at Mizpeh.

The message to the king of Ammon
And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, saying, What do you have to do with me, that you have come to fight in my land? And the king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah's messengers, Because Israel took my land when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan. So give it back peaceably now. And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites, and said to him: This is what Jephthah says. Israel didn't take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites. But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they walked through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass through your land. But the king of Edom wouldn't listen. And they sent to the king of Moab as well, and he wouldn't agree. So Israel stayed at Kadesh. Then they went through the wilderness and went round the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came along the east side of the land of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they didn't come inside the border of Moab, because the Arnon was the border of Moab. And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our own place. But Sihon wouldn't trust Israel to pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and camped at Jahaz and fought against Israel. And the Lord God of Israel gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them down. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country. And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness to the Jordan. So the Lord God of Israel drove out the Amorites before his people Israel. And are you going to take possession of it? Won't you take possession of whatever Chemosh your god gives you? So whoever the Lord our God drives out before us, we will take possession of their land. And are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel, or ever fight against them? While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon, for three hundred years — why didn't you recover them in all that time? So I haven't wronged you. You are the one doing wrong, making war on me. Let the Lord, the Judge, judge today between the Israelites and the Ammonites. But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message Jephthah sent him.

While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns and in Aroer and its towns and in all the towns along the borders of Arnon, three hundred years — why didn't you get them back in that time? So I haven't sinned against you. But you're doing me wrong by making war on me. Let the Lord the Judge judge today between the people of Israel and the Ammonites. But the king of the Ammonites didn't listen to the words of Jephthah that he sent him.

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh; Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh. Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab. But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it? Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time? The vow
Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went on to the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, If you will give the Ammonites into my hands, then whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I come back in peace from the Ammonites will be the Lord's, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering. So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight them, and the Lord gave them into his hands. And he struck them from Aroer all the way to Minnith, twenty towns, and as far as Abel-Keramim. It was a very great slaughter. So the Ammonites were brought down before the Israelites. And Jephthah came to his house at Mizpeh, and there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing. And she was his only child. Apart from her he had neither son nor daughter. And when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, Oh, my daughter. You have brought me very low, and you are the one who has undone me. Because I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I can't take it back. And she said to him, My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord. Do to me what came out of your mouth — since the Lord has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, the Ammonites. And she said to her father, Let this one thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, so I can go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions. And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months. And she went with her companions and wept for her virginity on the mountains. And at the end of two months she came back to her father, and he did with her according to the vow he had made. And she had never known a man. And it became a custom in Israel that the women of Israel went out every year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in the year.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah, and he went over Gilead and Manasseh, and went over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went over to the Ammonites. And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: If you'll definitely hand the Ammonites over into my hands, then whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I come back in peace from the Ammonites will definitely be the Lord's, and I'll offer it up for a burnt offering. So Jephthah went over to the Ammonites to fight them. And the Lord handed them over into his hands. And he struck them from Aroer right to Minnith, twenty towns, and to the plain of the vineyards, with a very great killing. So the Ammonites were brought down in front of the people of Israel. And Jephthah came to Mizpah, to his house. And there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing. And she was his only child. Apart from her he had no son or daughter. And when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said: My daughter, you've brought me right down, and you're one of the ones who trouble me. Because I've opened my mouth to the Lord, and I can't go back. And she said to him: My father, if you've opened your mouth to the Lord, do to me what's come out of your mouth — seeing the Lord has paid back the ones against you, the Ammonites. And she said to her father: Let this be done for me. Leave me alone two months, so I can go up and down on the mountains and weep over my young womanhood, I and my friends. And he said: Go. And he sent her away for two months. And she went with her friends and wept over her young womanhood on the mountains. And at the end of two months she came back to her father, and he did with her what he'd vowed. And she'd never known a man. And it became a rule in Israel, that the daughters of Israel went year by year to grieve for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days a year.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering. So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back. And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel, That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went on to the Ammonites.

And she said to him, My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord. Do to me what came out of your mouth — since the Lord has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, the Ammonites.
